Road to Recovery: Legislative Success Brings Reason for Economic Optimism

The Missouri General Assembly has passed vital, forward-looking legislation that will modernize our infrastructure, safeguard reopening businesses, and prepare Missourians for the post-pandemic economy — proposals championed by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Missouri Chamber succeeded in advancing legislation that will:
  • Repair and modernize our transportation infrastructure
  • Stop opportunistic COVID-19 lawsuits
  • Provide sales tax fairness for local businesses
  • Train Missourians for in-demand jobs
  • Modernize Missouri’s utility infrastructure
  • Safeguard against prescription drug abuse
  • Protect Missouri’s business climate

These successes, combined with a strong push to vaccinate Missourians against COVID-19 and the coming phase-out of enhanced unemployment benefits will place Missouri ahead of the curve as the global economy recovers.

Parkville Named a Tree City USA
for 31st Year in a Row

For the 31st year in a row, the City of Parkville was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Parkville is one of only 15 communities in Missouri that has been named Tree City USA for 31 years or more.

The City achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements:
·         A tree board or department;
·         A tree care ordinance;
·         An annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and
·         Arbor Day observance and proclamation
Park University Again Offers Early College Online Program for High School Students

High school students can get a head start on earning college credits by enrolling in Park University’s Early College Online program. The program, in its second year, will begin on Monday, June 7, in conjunction with Park’s eight-week Summer term.

High school students who will complete their sophomore or junior year this spring and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to participate, earning college credit at a fraction of the University’s regular tuition rate and within a shorter timeframe than through dual credit or Advanced Placement coursework. Students earn college credit and learn how to effectively participate in college courses online — an increasingly important skill to possess.

The program allows students to take up to two online courses (six credit hours) taught by experienced Park University faculty. Early College Online courses do not require students to log in at set meeting times; however, students will have multiple optional times to interact with each other and their instructors via videoconference throughout the term. Small class sizes, faculty-student interaction, and virtual academic support resources are in place to aid student success.

The University is offering four courses for high school students as a part of the program: Public Speaking (CA 103), Educational Psychology (EDU 203), Medical Terminology (FW 175), and American National Government (PO 200) at a cost of $90 per credit hour ($270 per course). This is a discount of more than 79 percent of the regular tuition rate of $427 per credit hour.

May 15, 2021

At their Special Meeting on May 15, the Platte County Health Department’s Board of Trustees rescinded all previous Public Health Orders related to COVID-19 and adopted the attached Public Health Recommendations, effective immediately. In summary the Recommendations:

  1. Rescind all previous limits on business operations and gatherings under previous COVID-19 orders.
  2. Apply to non-healthcare settings. For related information for healthcare settings, view the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Updated Healthcare Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations in Response to COVID-19 Vaccination and any revisions thereof.
  3. State that Elementary and Secondary Schools should continue to comply with “Missouri School Reopening & Operating Guidance”, created by the Department of Health & Senior Services and the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) and any revisions thereof.
  4. State that Masks or face coverings may be required by businesses, which may refuse service to any person who refuses to wear a Mask or Face Covering. However, a business may not require an individual to produce written verification of a medical condition that prohibits the use of a Mask or Face Covering.
