From the Archives
Sean Gresh, the former Brother Bernard Gresh, FSC, was not only one of the Founding Christian Brothers in the 1964-65 school year, he was also the first basketball coach at Hudson Catholic, piloting the Freshmen Basketball team of that year to our first City Championship. Here below, Sean was delighted to meet another basketball champion, our current Varsity Basketball Head Coach Nicholas Mariniello at the 2017 Hall of Fame Dinner.
George Blaney was hired as the first varsity basketball coach in 1965, following a brief N.B.A. career consisting of stints with the New York Knickerbockers (a 1961 draft pick) and Philadelphia 76ers. He served at Hudson Catholic for three seasons before moving on to the collegiate ranks where he built a 43-year career as a distinguished college basketball coach.

Starting at Stonehill College in 1968, Coach Blaney served for two seasons, then three seasons at Dartmouth College, before returning to his alma mater Holy Cross, where he was a standout player and joined the ranks of the 1,000-point club. He directed Holy Cross for 22 seasons, after which Seton Hall came calling. He ended his head coaching career at Seton Hall in 1997, after three seasons.
In 2000, he joined Jim Calhoun’s staff as an assistant coach at UConn, enjoying NCAA National Championships in 2004 and 2011, and coaching 12 seasons until retirement in 2012. But it all began at McGinley Square!

Coach Blaney makes his home in Falmouth, MA, and sends his regards along to all at Hudson Catholic.
