2-1-1 Monthly Report for October 2018
Noteworthy Updates
During the month of October, 4,938 calls were handled by 2-1-1 Resource Specialists and 7,906 health, housing and human service referrals were provided. Of the unduplicated callers, 70% are female, 28% are single mothers with minor children, and 58% reported they are living with disabilities. (These statistics exclude callers who opted to not provide demographic information during intake.)

The Great California ShakeOut
On October 18 at 10:18 am our staff dropped, covered, and held on for the Great California ShakeOut. This is the ShakeOut's 10th Anniversary, dedicated to preparing cities, schools, organizations, and families for major earthquakes. Since 2-1-1 plays a pivotal role in disaster response, our agency drills frequently throughout the year .

Keep Oakland Housed
I n October the Keep Oakland Housed initiative was launched as a coordinated strategy to prevent Oakland residents from losing their housing and becoming homeless. The program is made possible in part by funding from Kaiser Permanente and  the San Francisco Foundation. 2-1-1 is excited to play a role in this initiative by referring eligible Oakland callers to partner agencies BACS, Catholic Charities of the East Bay, and East Bay Community Law Center for assistance with legal representation, emergency financial assistance, and supportive services.
Call Examples
A single father called from Hayward seeking holiday food baskets and toy giveaways. He had just gained custody of his young son and wanted to make sure he had enough resources for the upcoming holidays. 2-1-1 gave the caller a referral to the Salvation Army’s Holiday Basket distribution and the Food Helpline through the Alameda County Community Food Bank and explained their requirements for registration.

Databases

Two agencies and four programs were added to the Services Database for a total of 1,216 agencies and 3,112 programs.   Information was updated in our database to reflect the services available through the new Keep Oakland Housed initative.
176   new units were added to the housing database in October for a total of 75,559 housing units.
Did you know? Eden I&R's AHIP (AIDS Housing Information Project) program offers housing and human services resource referrals to People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) via a designated phone line and through one-on-one, in-person assistance at clinics and AIDS Service Organizations. In October, AHIP handled 91 calls, provided 108 service referrals and 308 housing referrals.

Eden I&R's health and human services data is provided free through the agency's publicly accessible websites at www.edenir.org and  www.211alamedacounty.org , and www.achousingchoices.org .

In October, Eden I&R's websites received 35,201 page views and 6,777 sessions/visitors. 
Meetings

In October, staff participated in 26 meetings, phone calls, and webinars with current and potential partners. Highlights included Eden I&R's Executive Director attending the annual 2-1-1 California Summit in Sacramento. Representatives from other 2-1-1 systems throughout the state gathered for networking, legislative updates and priorities impacting 2-1-1s in California, outreach updates, disaster response discussion, and potential partnership opportunities.

Partnership Spotlight

In October Eden Housing celebrated 50 years serving the community. Several members of Eden I&R's current and former staff were pleased to be part of the celebration. Congratulations, Eden Housing, and here's to 50 more years of service!
Volunteer Highlight

Eden I&R was proud to have one of our agency's amazing volunteers, Christina Blackmon, honored at the city of Hayward's Annual Hayward Volunteer Recognition and Awards dinner held on October 4. Thank you Christina for your volunteerism!
Fairs / Events / Outreach

In October, Eden I&R served 1,051  people at training, events, and fairs and distributed 3,771 pieces of outreach materials to service providers and residents of Alameda County.

2-1-1 staff hosted a booth and provided resource referrals to participants at the following:
  • Dublin Senior Info Fair in Dublin
  • Chabot College DisAbility Awareness Day in Hayward
  • Los Positas College Health Fair in Livermore
Outreach materials were distributed to by request to: A private citizen in Oakland; Four Seasons of Oakland; UC Berkeley Police Department; YMCA Early Childhood Services in Emeryville, and International Rescue Committee of Oakland.

Disaster Preparedness Trainings

In October, the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator conducted SKIP (Safety Kept In Place) trainings for:
  • Mills College in Oakland
  • Eden I&R/2-1-1 Alameda County staff in Hayward
  • California State University East Bay Nursing Students in Hayward (two trainings)
  • Eden I&R Board of Directors in Hayward

Technology

T his month Eden I&R started migrating reports into a new reporting and analytics platform based on Microsoft Power BI. Additionally, staff met with the Alameda County Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) technology team and Alameda County Housing and Community Development staff to discuss 2-1-1 team members becoming trained on Clarity, the County's HMIS.
