Local Government Regulation of Nonferrous Mining - Unearthing Your Options
10:00-11:00 a.m.
Tuesday, December 11
Audio

Toward the end of the 2017 legislative session, Wisconsin ended its nearly 20-year moratorium on nonferrous metallic mining in the state. In doing so, the Legislature recognized a shared responsibility between state and local governments in the regulation of mining. Mining presents unique land use regulatory issues and it is important for local government policy makers and administrators to understand what regulatory tools are at their disposal and how those tools may be used when it come to considering, approving, and monitoring a nonferrous metallic mine. The presenters in this session will provide an overview of the regulatory tools and provide perspective on how various towns and counties have chosen to proceed. Go to  https://lgc.uwex.edu/distance-education/current-issues-affecting-local-government-officials/

Lessons Learned and Water Saved Through Metering Irrigation Water
3:00-4:00 p.m.
Tuesday, December 11
Online

Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is a wholesale water provider in Northern Utah that provides drinking water to a population of over 620,000 people, water for industrial uses, secondary irrigation water for residential and commercial properties and agricultural irrigation water. David Rice will present an update of what they have learned in the process of metering these connections. Up until 2010, the pressurized secondary irrigation water was unmetered and users were charged a flat rate for water allocated to their parcel. In 2010, the District began to install meters and provide users with a monthly report on their usage in comparison to an estimated need based on parcel size and weather data. The results have been significant in reductions considering prior to meter install there was no knowledge of use. Metering is now a top priority to be able to meet long-term conservation goals and bring accountability to end users. To find out more, check out  https://learn.extension.org/events/3533
Soil Balancing: The Questions Matter
12:30-2:00 p.m.
Wednesday, December 12
Online

"You don't know enough to know what you need to know." This recent recollection by a farmer after their encounter with a more experienced one reminds us that the questions matter . Much is said, written, and claimed about Soil Balancing but all is still not clear about it. If there is to be a more useful knowledge base about Soil Balancing-shared by farmers, consultants, and researchers alike-new questions and new ways of addressing them must be shared and accepted by many. Join us to discuss and shape where investigations of Soil Balancing should go next and how. Go to https://offer.osu.edu/SB-call-in
