Florida Atlantic University faculty, staff and students came together with local officials and community partners on Thursday, Nov. 21 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter with a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new FAU Neuroscience Building and a new residence hall.

The 58,000-square-foot FAU Neuroscience Building will enhance the university’s collaborative research with Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research. The $17.1 million, 165-bed residence hall will provide a total of 435 beds for the Jupiter campus that is currently at max capacity.

The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University recently received five delegation awards at the National Model United Nations competition in Washington, D.C. A team of 75 FAU students participated in the annual competition where schools represent countries and students step into the shoes of diplomats to solve global problems. FAU was the most awarded team out of the 76 competing universities that participated. Ten of the students were from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and they received the Distinguished Delegation Award... Read more

A study conducted by Florida Atlantic University Researchers in the College of Education and collaborators finds that video prompting using an iPad produces immediate and lasting effects for teens with autism and that parents can be powerful delivery agents to increase independence in their children. Results of the study showed that all of the children substantially improved correct and independent completion of their daily living skills, which validates that video prompting procedures are effective in ameliorating skill deficits... To effectively manage and treat tremors in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, there is an urgent need for an approach that can continuously measure tremors accurately without the need for patients to perform specific tasks as they go about their daily activities. Behnaz Ghoraani, Ph.D., senior author and a fellow of FAU’s Brain Institute and collaborators are teaching machines to accomplish this job... Read more

It appears that sunlight-driven photoreactions could be an important sink of buoyant plastics at sea. Sunlight also may have a role in reducing plastics to sizes below those captured by oceanic studies. This theory could partly explain how more than 98 percent of the plastics entering the oceans go missing every year.

“In addition, as these plastics dissolve at sea, they release biologically active organic compounds, which are measured as total dissolved organic carbon, a major byproduct of sunlight-driven plastic photodegradation.”said Shiye Zhao, Ph.D., senior author and a post-doc researcher working in the laboratory of  Tracy Mincer, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biology/biogeochemistry at FAU’s Harbor Branch and  Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College... Read more
