The Portland Gale: Wreck of the Steamer Portland

The fateful loss of the PS Portland in a devastating 1898 gale is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in New England history. Researching the Portland has been a lifelong pursuit for local author and historian Art Milmore. He is the author of And the Sea Shall Have Them All to complete the work of his mentor Edward Rowe Snow. The book tells the story of the two one-hundred-year-old mysteries surrounding the sinking, and details the tragic story of the Steamer Portland lost in the Thanksgiving gale in 1898. The cost of the event is $5 payable in advance by registering at the COA or at the door on the night. The Library Plaza Program Room is handicapped accessible. Part of "Opportunities" Lifelong Learning, a joint venture of the Marshfield COA and Ventress Memorial Library.

Children's Room Updates

We are now circulating talking Vox picture books! There’s no need for computers, tablets or CDs with these brand new books. Children simply push a button to listen and read. Vox books can be checked out for two weeks at a time, and must be returned to the library circulation desk.

Next week, join us for a special Rainbow Magic Fairy Party on Saturday, Nov. 16th at 10:30 am! We'll read part of a Magic Rainbow Fairy book and then make different crafts based around the popular book series! This party is geared towards 4-8 year olds with caregivers, but younger or older siblings are welcome. No registration required.

Gentle Floor Yoga Class Series Extended

Updates

Looking for something new to read? Check out the new " Teen Book List " section of our website. Also, there are two exciting special events for teens happening this month, aside from our regular programs for teens in grades 7-12. On Thursday, November 7th from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. (early release day), we are hosting the first of the Makerspace Make and Take Series . Teens will be able to drop in and use our Cricut machine to make a special etsy-worthy Thanksgiving sign to take home and impress their family. We are also excited to present The Real Thanksgiving: Facts & Snacks , a collaboration with local historian, Regina Porter, with recipes provided by the Plimoth Plantation. The event will take place Tuesday, November 12 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.. Please register online . Finally, teens can now borrow chromebooks and headphones in the teen room Monday - Thursday from 3-6 p.m. For more information click here . Sail Away on the Craft of Pastel Painting

On Monday, November 18th from 6 to 8 p.m., Gregory Maichack, award-winning pastel artist, will present an adult hands-on workshop, "Sail Away on the Craft of Pastel Painting." His pastel painting workshop is designed for sheer beginners to experienced artists and is open to adults and teens 18 and up. Seats may fill quickly and pre-registration is required.
