Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College welcomed new students. The college held
SOAR (Student Orientation, Academic, and Registration) for nearly 90 incoming owls and their families on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29. WHC SOAR is a holistic experience that introduces future owls to the Wilkes Honors College faculty, staff, and current students. Students attended informational sessions, participated in activities, and developed relationships with other new students. The Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Corey A. King, Ph.D., and the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, Larry Faerman, Ph.D., shared tips with parents on how to be supportive, challenging, and nurturing as their student begins their college journey. FAU President John Kelly, Ph.D., provided words of encouragement to prepare the students for a successful start to their academic career at FAU.

Florida Atlantic University named
Sarah Milton, Ph.D., the interim chair of the department of biological sciences beginning July 13. "She is one of the leaders of our faculty and will provide an important bridge to the future of the department," said Rod Murphey, Ph.D., associate vice president for academic affairs of FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus. "Her research focuses on conservation biology and the physiology of environmental stress. News publications such as the New York Times and National Geographic often features her work. During the past 13 years, she has demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, mentoring students, as well as administering the Marine Science Graduate program and the Integrative Biology Ph.D. program. We look forward to her leadership of the department."

Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D., associate professor of biological sciences in FAU’s
Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and a member of the
FAU Brain Institute (I-BRAIN) recently provided a special guest seminar at the Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Dawson-Scully discussed his current research in a talk titled, "Protein Kinase G modulates seizure duration in C. elegans using a novel electroconvulsion assay.” Dawson-Scully also presented seminars at Hebrew University and Ariel University. During the historic trip to Israel with Governor Ron Desantis, FAU signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with universities and organizations to further strengthen the university’s ties with higher education and research in Israel.
