Rave reviews from members and attendees for 13th Annual BIANYS Meeting
The 13th Annual Meeting of the Business Incubator Association of New York State was held June 10th and 11th in Syracuse, New York. Day one events were held at the Tech Garden with presentations from David Rose the Founder of both GUST and the New York Angels, and New York State Comptroller Tom Dinapoli. Day 2 was at the Central New York Biotech Accelerator. With panels and presentations from Chris Heively from Techstars, the Mayor of Syracuse and the County Executive of Onondaga County. Attendees enjoyed local tours of area incubators as well.

The Comptroller announced that the pension fund invested $10 Million in Armory Square Ventures to invest in New York State Startups.

Welcome BIANYS' newest Board member and our new officers

The members elected Jeffrey Arywitz from RIT's Venture Creations for the open seat vacated when former board member Michael Riedlinger from the Nextcorps incubator in Rochester decided not to run for re-election. Jeff has a long career in innovation stemming from his days at Eastman Kodak to his efforts today in mentoring startups.

Also re-elected to a new three year term on the Board was Thomas Schryver and Esther Vargas.

The Board also elected its new officers after the Annual Meeting. AnnMarie Scheidt stepped down as Chair of the BIANYS board after many years of service in that position and will assume a role of Chairwoman Emeritus, Thomas Schryver from Cornell University's Center for Regional Economic Advancement will assume the role as Chairman, Tom previously served as our Vice Chair. Our new Vice Chair is Steven Kuyan from NYU's Urban Future Labs, Steve was our treasurer, our new Treasurer is Kathi Durdon from the Central New York Biotech Accelerator. El Java Abdul Qadir our former Secretary stepped down from the E Board position, but remains on the Board of Directors, he is replaced by our new Secretary, Tom Murdoch from the University of Buffalo Incubator program.


Deadline Extended for $80,000 La Idea RFP To Support Entrepreneurship Centers in Central America

Funded and initiated by the United States Department of State and in partnership with CENPROMYPE, InBIA is hosting the La Idea Incubator Program, a powerful initiative focused on strengthening entrepreneurship and job creation within Central America. 

One U.S. entrepreneurship center will be selected to receive $80,000 to develop and deliver a “Train the Trainer” curriculum to entrepreneurship support organizations in Central America. The request for proposals process is now open and all completed proposals will be due on July 26, 2019 at 11:59 PM EST. This Short Course is an accelerated 2-week program utilizing the Lean Launchpad Methodology. Teams will ‘Get out of the Building’ and talk to potential customers to discover how their technology could effectively ‘solve’ customers’ unmet needs. The curriculum will focus on customer development and emphasizes the Right Hand Side of the Business Model Canvas.

HiOperator’s hiring surge makes it one of Buffalo’s hottest startups

Customer service is a vast but fragmented industry.
One of Buffalo’s hottest startups believes it can make a big mark by introducing a different business model.
HiOperator, led by founder and CEO  Elizabeth Tsai , moved to Buffalo in late 2018 and has since added more than 30 workers to its headquarters at the 43North incubator in the Thomas R. Beecher Jr. Innovation Center.


SBU Commercialization Shines At Incubator Showcase

The university’s fourth-annual Incubator Showcase, a one-day ingenuity bazaar highlighting Stony Brook’s complex commercialization ecosystem, filled CEWIT with imagination Wednesday, as residents and clients of SBU’s myriad incubators and business-development programs shared their progress with potential investors, fellow innovators and other impressionable – and notably impressed – visitors.


UB launches Innovation Hub

New York State and UB announced yesterday the official launch of the Innovation Hub, designed to help connect ideas to action and move research from the lab to the marketplace.
The Innovation Hub is funded through a $32 million Buffalo Billion II grant commitment from New York State and supports innovation at UB and its leading research partners, including Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Jacobs Institute, Hauptmann-Woodward Medical Research Institute and Kaleida Health.


The RIT Venture Creations Technology Business Incubator Graduates Four Companies

This March, Venture Creations hosted a Graduation Ceremony for four of our amazing companies. Shannon Chevier, whose startup IMSWorkX was a 2015 Venture Creations graduate, was our keynote speaker and had some inspiring words for the at tendees on the growth of a business and recovery from failure.   Attendees were able to get up close and personal with their products and learn more about everything from eye tracking, to thermal cooling and all things mushrooms. Empire Medicinals (d.b.a. Leep Foods), SkyOp, ThermApparel and Positive Science will all move on to continue the growth of their businesses. The total number of companies launched through Venture Creations now stands at 42, with 559 jobs having been created.

FuzeHub Commercialization Competition

November 18 - 19: Albany Capital Center, Albany, NY
Companies will compete in person to pitch the commercialization potential of their product or technology. Award funds must be used to further develop a working prototype which will enable the applicant to pursue additional investment and customers, leading to the commercialization of their product.

If your company wishes to apply to win up to a $150,000 top prize, the application period will open July 15th.
