A Message from the Lead Principal Investigator

|
We are delighted to announce that the Pediatric Trials Network's (PTN) contract has been renewed by the
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) until 2026. We are grateful to each and every one of our partners who made this possible. Without enrollment, there are no clinical trials. Our investigator-partners, including PIs, nurses, study coordinators, research pharmacists, and others, are central to our efforts to find the safest, most effective doses of commonly used drugs to inform the treatment of infants and children.
Please see the article below for more details. And as always, thank you—your care and enthusiasm make this essential work possible.

PTN Contract Renewed Until 2026
The PTN was recently awarded a contract by the
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to design and lead pediatric trials until 2026.
“Over the last eight years, we have been able to conduct 26 clinical trials in 13 different therapeutic areas enrolling over 8,000 children, which is more than triple the scope of work that was outlined in the initial NIH contract,” said Dr. Danny Benjamin, principal investigator and chair of the PTN.
Benjamin intends for the PTN to lead the way in revolutionizing how clinical trials are conducted in children. Additional faculty supporting the contract include Dr. Christoph Hornik, Dr. Kanecia Zimmerman, and Dr. Michael Cohen-Wolkowiez.

PTN Investigators and the STAR Program for Aspiring Researchers
The
Summer Training in Academic Research (STAR) Program
welcomed 21 participants at its kickoff event on Monday, June 18. Led by the PTN's Dr. Danny Benjamin, the eight-week program provides hands-on research experience for undergraduate students, high school students, and middle and high school teachers during the summer academic break. Participants are matched with faculty mentors to work on original, hypothesis-driven projects, and receive intensive instruction in applied statistics, data analysis, and developing scientific manuscripts.

PTN Creates Data Repository to Aid in Pediatric Research
Randomized clinical trials are the gold standard in clinical research, but they often require a great deal of time and cost and may not be feasible to conduct in vulnerable populations like premature infants. To overcome these difficulties, the PTN developed a repository of electronic health record (EHR) data gathered from nearly 265,000 pediatric patients to better guide research.
“This real-world data can be used to target drugs, conditions, and subpopulations for clinical studies that will maximize public health benefit and help identify areas for future study,” said PTN investigator Dr. Christoph Hornik, who led the development of the data repository.

Calling All PTN Investigators:
New Patient Engagement Initiative
The PTN is spearheading a new effort to provide study participants and their families with thank you messages and lay-friendly study results summaries so they can be better connected to the outcomes of our work together. To inform these efforts, we will be conducting formative and outcome evaluation research in partnership with Duke University’s Bioethics and Stakeholder Engagement (BASE) Lab. We want to hear from 3 to 4 caregivers and adolescent participants at your site to gather feedback on how we can communicate with them most effectively.
Please
send us an email
if you have questions or would like your site to be involved. PTN will be providing more information during upcoming investigator calls.
