Long Island Chapter Events:
Our Annual Luncheon the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville
Our signature event of the year, the TTN/LI Annual Luncheon, is described by one of our chapter members, Bonnie Sibener:
Who said you can’t eat atmosphere – you most definitely can! TTN/LI’s annual luncheon was held at the Crescent Club on Long Island Sound on June 12. Over 300 capri-clad ladies attended the sold-out affair on a made to order, gloriously sunny day. Cocktail hour is always the best part and stations were set up with fruits and veggies. Butler service brought out huge shrimp with sauce in little dishes and mushroom, phyllo dough pinwheels. The vendors were out in force with everything from jewelry, to tops and dresses, to quiche and pocketbooks. Time for some serious shopping, eating, drinking and schmoozing! The large ballroom, where we were served a delicious lunch, was filled with hat-clad ladies attentively listening for their raffle names to be called. It was particularly gratifying to know that $2,000 of the raffle proceeds will be used to purchase bathing suits, towels and summer equipment, so children living in a Brentwood shelter will be able to attend summer camp.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that our TTN/LI membership is up to 737 women, the largest TTN chapter in the country! TTN has been one of the cornerstones of my retirement. I have met the most wonderful group of women and we have shared many new experiences together. I am so grateful to the organization for this opportunity. My thanks to the committee for all their hard work in putting together a most delightful afternoon!

From all of us--Yes, we know, it takes a “Village”
Thanks to the Program Committee, headed by Joan Ayoub and Claudia Cohen. Special Thanks to the luncheon sub-committee, headed by Arlyn Wasserberg, with assistance from Linda Sotomayor, Patty Mahon, Jane Greenberg, Donna DeVito, and Hope Simon. Thanks too, to all the Program Committee members and volunteers who helped in selecting the venue (Alicia and Ellen), the menus, the registration, the seating, the setting up, the raffles, and working with the vendors (Paula Paterno).
Hudson Valley Bus Trip
On May 14, more than 40 TTN/LI women boarded the Hampton Jitney to spend a lovely spring day in the Hudson Valley. Our first stop was a tour of West Point, followed by a delicious lunch at the MacArthur Riverview Restaurant, which overlooks the Hudson River. We completed a busy day with a tour of the beautifully restored Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison NY.
Contemporary Social Issues (CSI)
On Friday, April 13, CSI presented a program on Investigative Reporting and Fake News. Our presenter was Adjunct Professor Vicki Metz of SUNY Old Westbury, who was formerly the LI Bureau Chief of ABC Eyewitness News.
Professor Metz explained the history of Investigative Reporting, beginning with the Golden Age of Progressive Journalism with such reformers as Nellie Bly, Ida B. Turnbull and Jacob Riis. Of course, the media industry has changed a great deal since then. Professor Metz says determining "real" from "fake" news requires being an intelligent consumer, reading different newspapers, watching more than one TV news station, and being open to listening to different opinions.
We are looking forward to our next event on June 26th event, a lecture and tour on the preservation of Long Island, being held in Cold Spring Harbor.
Women in Transition (WIT) Workshop
The WIT workshop, attended in April by 14 women, continues to resonate with our members and guests. The program, which is facilitated by Nancy Goldwasser, Charlotte Hollander and Barbara Isenstadt has a number of goals. These include: understanding the transition process, enhancing skills to successfully navigate change, and creating a “next steps” action plan, all with women in a similar life stage. The highly positive feedback included these comments:
"It provided a very valuable tool to help me move forward."
"The workshop is a credit to TTN and its mission."
"I appreciated meeting a group of intelligent women in the same stage of life with whom I can share experiences and that can be a source of support and encouragement for each other."
Please consider registering for the next WIT Workshop to be held on Sunday, November 11.

We also are looking for new members to help with programming. If you are interested in joining the committee, or have any questions, email Leslie Fischler ( lesbob462@aol.com ).
Membership Corner
On May 14, Debbie Fox and five members of the Membership Services Committee hosted 23 women in Debbie’s home for a New Member Tea, one of the largest groups of new members we have welcomed at a tea. Each committee representative took a few minutes to explain a different aspect of the TTN/LI chapter. Every woman who joins TTN is invited to a New Member Tea, which is generally held every other month. The New Member Teas provide an opportunity for new members to meet one another in an informal setting, to learn more about TTN, especially about the many ways to participate in the chapter, and to have their questions answered by long-term members. They may also sign up for new SIGs; some have even formed new groups at the tea, if there are other women who share an interest.
Community Impact / Volunteers
Once again TTN/LI volunteers gave their all to support the Prom Boutique at Nassau Community College. The Long Island Volunteer Center sponsors this wonderful event every year and TTN/LI has been a part of it for many years. Girls who are graduating from high school and cannot afford the expense of attending their prom are given the opportunity to be beautifully outfitted at no charge.
TTN volunteers unpack and sort the gowns, shoes, purses, and jewelry to make the room resemble a boutique. We help the girls select their dresses and accessories and watch them become princesses before our eyes.
Thank you to the many TTN/LI volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this event a great success!
Volunteer/Community Impact Committee of TTN Long Island partners with WNBC (here with anchors Stacey Bell and David Ushery), Telemundo and Island Harvest at Levittown's Stop & Shop on April 28th to help feed hungry families on Long Island.
TTN volunteers assist Island Harvest in food sort collected in letter carriers food drive."
Dear TTN STITCHERS,
Thanks so much for the beautiful items. We appreciate the steady involvement of your chapter and appreciate all you do for us. Please thank your volunteers and let them know everything is so well received when delivered to those in need.
