Quick News for Wednesday, August 8

Wednesday with the Bishop

August 1 was a wonderful day of sharing with Bishop Ely, Bishop of Vermont, who provides pastoral oversight to St. John's under our DEPO agreement. He spent the morning with the Vestry, followed by Holy Eucharist and luncheon with members of the parish who then enjoyed a Q and A session with him. The Vestry had more time with him before all adjourned to greet the choir boys who arrived from Boston in the late afternoon. We are grateful that we had an opportunity to learn, worship, relax and spend time together.

Thank you Bishop Ely!

Choir Boys

Ten choir boys, with their directors and leaders Andrew Sheranian and Jeff Gonyeau just completed the sixth annual choir camp at St. John's. Five veteran boys returned and five rookies joined them for a busy week hosted by the members of our parish.

Mornings were spent in rehearsal. In the afternoons the boys had a tour of Essex Farm, climbed Rattlesnake mountain and swam at Mo Ecclesine's pool.

Each day they had their evening meal on the shores of Lake Champlain and Willsboro Bay hosted by a different family each evening. Five host families provided bed and breakfast for the singers and Claudia Caveney prepared lunches daily and organized a pot luck brunch following worship on Sunday.

On Saturday night all the boys had a slumber party together at the Perez home.  Followed the next morning with breakfast there before returning to church.

St. John's church was filled with 80 attendees at Saturday Evensong and 85 worshippers on Sunday morning to hear the heavenly music provided by the choir boys as well as several members from St. John's. Andrew put our new organ through its paces
with Bach prelude and postlude.

As we begin to plan for next year, please give your feedback and suggestions to Father Craig or Carole Harsh. We will have a meeting immediately after worship on Sunday, August 19 to review and discuss. Everyone is welcome.

Prayers of the People

Dear God, we pray for those known only to you within our community who are challenged by a serious illness. And for those known to us who are ill or recovering: Matt Looby; Dave Martin; Rob Close; Ed; Jill; Vivian; Judith Moore; Dottie Hall Swinehart; Helene Gray; and f or others known to us.

We commend to your mercy all who have died, especially for Heather Heyer, killed by a white supremacist one year ago in Charlottesville, Virginia, the dozen people randomly killed on the streets of Chicago this week, and all those who died in the earthquake in Indonesia.

Holy Day - August 11 Clare Abbess of Assisi, 1253

Clare was a daughter of a wealthy family and a noted beauty. She was inspired by Francis' words with the desire to serve God and to give her life to the following of Christ's teaching. She sought out Francis, and begged that she might become a member of his order. Francis could not refuse her pleas. He placed her temporarily in a nearby Benedictine convent. Claire became Mother Superior of the order, which was called the "poor ladies of St. Damian."

She governed the convent for forty years, caring for the sisters, ready to do whatever Francis directed her. In 1253, she became ill and died.

Let us pray. O God, whose blessed son became poor that we through his poverty might be rich: Deliver us from an inordinate love of this world. Inspire us by devotion and may we serve you with singleness of heart through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
