School Re-Opening Information
Below is a summary of information that the district sent to all families this week via email. This summary is being provided in case you missed the email.

As a district, it is our intent to announce a decision on the format of school for the third quarter by January 8, 2021.

The decision for third quarter could include the following options:

1. Remain all-virtual
2. Bring only students in earlier grades back into school buildings
3. Bring all students back into school buildings

In our decision making for the third quarter, the two major components being closely considered include:
1. The level of spread of COVID-19 in Madison compared to the level which public health officials deem is appropriate for reopening school buildings. In accordance with our practice throughout the pandemic, MMSD will continue to rely on guidance provided by our local public health officials.
2. The status of all MMSD school buildings relative to staffing, logistics and health protocols critical for operating schools safely. In addition, we are working to obtain an understanding of the number of students who are expected to return in-person, if given the option.

As a school community, we are all working together to navigate this pandemic. To better support our families, we have included the voices of internal and external stakeholders on our Covid-19 advisory committee as we consider our reopening decision. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with families to ensure decisions are centered around providing all students and staff a safe and successful learning environment.

It is our hope the information provided today will better inform families so they are able to determine their preference for sending their child to school for in-person learning or keep them learning virtually from home, if given the option. This preference information is an important part of our planning and decision making process.

We encourage all MMSD families to visit the district’s Reopening Schools webpage which provides detail on how we are approaching our decision. Watch your email inbox or phone for a link to a "preference poll," where you can indicate what decision you would likely make for your child once schools are able to safely reopen. You may have received the poll before this information was posted, and if you've already given us your preferences, thank you. If you wish to change your preferences, you will have another opportunity to let us know.

We are also polling students in grades 3–12 preference via email. We are interested in hearing from them about their learning preferences, once schools are able to safely reopen.

You are not locking yourself into a final decision by providing answers. We intend to continue adding information to our website in the coming days and weeks with updated information and answers to more of your questions. We hope the information provided will assist you in your decision-making for the third quarter.

Save the Date and Spread the Word! In addition to our reopening website, we want to give our community an interactive opportunity to ask questions via Facebook Live. We invite you to join us for a Facebook Live session on MMSD's Facebook page (facebook.com/MadisonSchoolsWI) next Thursday, December 17 at 6 p.m.

Thank you for your partnership as we travel together through this unprecedented journey.
8th Graders: Time to Plan for High School
We will spend some time over the next two months preparing our 8th grade students for high school using a series of lessons and videos. West staff members will be visiting our classes in January to answer students' questions before we enter course selections in Xello. While links to the electronic documents can be found at the below links, from Dec. 14th to Dec. 18th, we will have paper copies of the West High School Course Catalog and Course Card available at Hamilton Middle between 8:30am and 3:30pm. The catalogs and cards will be located inside of the main front doors on Waukesha St. Please take one if you'd like to do some high school planning over winter break. The catalog and cards will continue to be available after break during the same times. Again, if you can't make it to school, electronic versions of these materials are listed in the below links. West High School has also shared the below linked family newsletter with important dates and resources to help prepare for high school.

8-9 Transition Newsletter - family newsletter in English

8-9 Transition Newsletter - family newsletter in Spanish

High School Plan - Students will complete the first part of this plan in January including 9th grade course selections. We will upload the plan and make course selections using Xello by the end of January.

High School Course Catalog - Academic information and course descriptions.
Reminder: Hamilton PTO Family Gift Fund
2020 has been a particularly hard year for many of us, especially those of us affected directly by COVID and COVID-related job losses. Hamilton Middle School social worker, Kristin Ensminger, reports that at least 10 Hamilton families could use assistance to buy holiday gifts for their families (for adults and children in each family). The Hamilton PTO is asking for help to raise enough funds to purchase gift cards so that these families can buy their own presents. If you are able, please consider donating any amount ($25, $50, $75, $100 for example) to help us make this assistance possible. We currently hope to assist 10 families, and more if funds allow. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!! (The PTO will be raising these funds from now until 12/16/20).  See this link to the PTO site if interested in making a donation.
December Changes to Meal Distribution Schedule
Beginning this month, the schedule for meal pick-ups at MMSD schools and other distribution sites has changed. See this link for the December 1-18 schedule. Note that Hamilton Middle continues to be a pick up site on Monday mornings as normal.

Over winter break, there will be fewer sites open for meal distribution. Meal distribution over winter break will only take place on Tuesdays at sites identified on this schedule. Note that Hamilton Middle is NOT a distribution site during winter break.

If schools are closed due to weather, curbside pick-up for meal boxes will be canceled for that day. Please review the weekly delivery schedule to find the next day’s most convenient location. The District will be providing curbside pick-up for meal boxes during Winter Break on Tuesday December 22 and 29th. If weather is bad, please check district social media channels, MMSD website or Food & Nutrition’s website for cancellations. If canceled during winter break, the District will be move delivery to Wednesday, December 23 and/or 30.
