MJFA is delighted to present a special evening with author and art expert Peter Hastings Falk on Tuesday, June 18 th from 6-8 pm. Mr. Falk will present an illustrated talk entitled “An Insider’s View on Valuing Art”. The evening will start with cocktails at 6:00 pm and the talk will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.

Falk is the Editor & Chief Curator of the online art magazine, Discoveries in American Art . He is the author and publisher of numerous art reference books, including the national award-winning three-volume biographical dictionary, Who Was Who in American Art.  As an appraiser, he has served as an expert witness in a number of cases, including the trial over the value of the Andy Warhol estate collection. Falk is also a pioneer in the documenting and publishing of auction price results. He was the founding Editor-in-Chief of ArtNet in New York, and for the past 20 years has been the U.S. Editor of Artprice.com.

His “insider’s view” illuminates how the crucial roles of true innovation, quality, and historical significance affect value. He alerts collectors on how to separate decorative works from paintings with investment value. “Passion should be informed by extensive looking as well as intelligence gathering,” he says. He notes that only a small fraction of worthy artists can be found on the auction price databases and shows how to find valid comparables, identify exceptional unrecognized artists, and navigate the art market.

Falk’s approach ties in with one of the artists now being exhibited by Madelyn Jordon Fine Art and who was selected by Discoveries in American Art . Falk considers the exhibition of Eugene Healy’s recent works, which runs through June 29th, a “must see”. The exhibition includes 18 recent works, on panel, canvas and paper. Healy was inspired by such painters as Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Hoffman, and the Fauves, and has been recognized for his color drenched, abstract collage-paintings of shore scenes of New England, especially the beach towns of Connecticut and Rhode Island where he has resided for more than 25 years.
