New research published in PNAS suggests that rhetorical innovations may have played a significant role in winning acceptance for the new principles of governance that built the French republic’s foundation.
 
Simon DeDeo and his collaborators used machine learning techniques to comb through nearly 40,000 transcripts from deliberations during the revolution’s early days.

Doug Coulson and Gregory Laski participated in a "Book Salon" conversation on topics related to their recent publications, both of which investigated racial themes in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
 
The event was part of a new Department of English series focused on "ideas with a spine."

Imagine playing your favorite quiz game but only being able to speak in a foreign language. 
 
The first western Pennsylvania Russian Speaking Olympiada brought together local students to test their communication skills as well as their knowledge of Russian geography, history, and culture, with students also reciting and discussing Russian poetry.

The Celebration of Education ceremony, which honors awardees for education, teaching, outreach, advising and mentoring and innovation, will take place on April 30.
 
Four members from Dietrich College will be honored: Baruch Fischhoff , Gary DiLisio , Aidan Kestigian and Kevin Jarbo . Lisa Tetrault , the recipient of the college's teaching award, will also be recognized.

Attendees enjoyed a light brunch while having a front-row seat to the buggy races on the Baker Hall patio. Television monitors were also displayed inside of the tents for those who wished to stay warm while watching the students race.

Brunch attendees included current students, faculty and staff as well as Dietrich College alumni and their families.
