Bond Construction Updates

As the construction project nears final completion, there were no written updates, no change orders, and no pay application during November’s Board of Education meeting.

Masonry work at the north gym is still in progress. SM Wilson and Klingner continue to work with the district to resolve the final items related to the security camera and public address systems and to ensure all is functioning as expected. Please enjoy this time lapsed video SM Wilson put together for our community!
Missouri 2021 Bicentennial
Poster Submissions

Congratulations to the following Hallsville Intermediate School fifth grade students whose posters were submitted for the Missouri 2021 Bicentennial Poster Contest!
In 1921, Vinnorma Shaw designed a poster to commemorate the Missouri Centennial and advertise the Missouri Centennial Exposition at the Missouri State Fair. One hundred years later, students were asked to create a bicentennial poster focusing on the theme of Sharing Missouri’s Stories: Past, Present, and Future. The winning poster will be announced at the beginning of 2021. You can view all poster submissions from Missouri students here
Board of Education
November Highlights

Below are highlights of items discussed during the open session of the Wednesday, November 18 Board of Education Meeting. The Board of Education met in the secondary cafeteria. The full agenda with document links is available on the district website.

RECOGNITIONS
  • Mindy Demsich & Denise Rock, Intermediate Title I reading educators, were recognized for their positive attitudes and adaptability this school year. At the beginning of the year, a Title I teacher transitioned to a virtual teaching position within the district. In spite of this change, Mindy and Denise have been able to adapt and serve the needs of our Title I students through small reading and phonemic awareness groups.

  • HHS senior, Hudson Grant, was recognized for being accepted into the Moberly Area Technical Center’s first-ever National Technical Honor Society. Hudson was selected for this prestigious recognition for his achievements in Architecture, Engineering, and Design.

Evaluation of Health Services and Curriculum & Assessment Programs
Faculty and administration are committed to providing rigorous, high-quality curriculum and instruction that meets the educational needs of all students. With each program evaluation, strengths, concerns, and future recommendations are reviewed.

The first amendment to the FY21 budget was approved in the consent agenda. The amendments proposed were presented to the Board in previous meetings. In summary, these are adjustments for (a) restrictions enacted by Governor Parson since early July, (b) sub‐grants submitted by the district for meal distribution and expanded Internet connectivity, (c) additional Coronavirus Relief Funds recently allocated by the state, and (d) increased costs associated with the fully virtual option offered to our families in response to the pandemic.

COVID-19 Response
Our buildings and departments continue their implementation of pandemic response protocols as indicated in our return to school plans. Governor Parson announced updated guidance from state leaders on close contact quarantines in schools. The guidance indicates that if people in schools are wearing masks properly, students and staff would not be required to quarantine. The local health department released a statement indicating that protocols for contact tracing in Boone County schools will not be modified at this time. As such, our criteria for the identification of close contacts remains unchanged.

School Calendar for 2020-2021
Members of the staff proposed two calendar adjustments for consideration. The board did not take action on the school calendar.
Policy Updates: The first reading of policy and regulation updates took place. Policies go into effect after second reading and approval by the Board of Education.
Welcome, Ms. Kennedy!
Head of Operations

Join us in welcoming Jackie Kennedy to our Hallsville family! Kennedy joined the district this month as the Head of Operations for our campus, managing facilities, grounds, and transportation.

Kennedy was the Director of Transportation and Food Services for twelve years in the Lewis County C-1 School District in Lewistown, Missouri. During the past two years, Ms. Kennedy worked for Lincoln Public Schools in Lincoln, Nebraska as their Free & Reduced Meal Coordinator. She recently moved back to Columbia and jumped at the opportunity to continue her career in public education at Hallsville.

Growing up, both of Kennedy's parents were bus drivers. Following in their footsteps has helped her understand the importance of putting students and their safety first. We are excited she has joined our Hallsville family!
Microsoft Office Applications
Congratulations, students!

Congratulations to our HHS students who received their certification in the following Microsoft Office applications. The Microsoft Office Specialist Program provides industry-leading assessments of skills and knowledge through project-based testing, giving students real-world exercises to appraise their understanding of Microsoft Office. This guarantees that every certified user has demonstrated the ability to command the full features and functionality of Microsoft Office, preparing them for future academic or workforce opportunities.
In addition, Madison was named Missouri’s Champion based on her Microsoft Word score and was selected to compete in Certiport’s 2021 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship.
HHS StuCo Shares the Holiday Spirit
By Kylie Mesmer, StuCo Public Relations Director

To get our students and staff in the holiday spirit, HHS Student Council planned a week full of winter activities! StuCo members created snowflakes and other paper designs to be hung up in the hallways. Meanwhile, the student body has been participating in scavenger hunts to find our Elves on the Shelves (some of which are styling some awesome accessories) for some candy prizes! We are also introducing Send a Snowflake, where students can send their friends goody bags! On our StuCo Instagram page, we are hosting Winter Trivia, and this Friday will be our Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest! Students and staff members, both in-person and in quarantine, will be able to don their ugliest holiday sweaters and compete to win prizes! We hope that these activities are adding some well-needed holiday cheer, and we look forward to having even more fun with our school!
