Barrett Whitesell, of Kailua, will be attending the
Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Regional Training Session at The Colorado Horse Park July 31-Aug. 4. We caught up with her before she attends the session:
How did you hear about EAP?
I heard about EAP from my trainer (Amy Quinlan), who has since then pushed me into applying and now attending.
What was your reaction when you learned you were accepted to EAP?
When I learned I was accepted, I was in shock, as I had never been involved in something so large on the mainland. Along with this, excited to meet new people and travel to a new place!
What are you looking forward to about the Regional Training Session?
I’m most looking foreword to making friends and riding with someone new!
What do you think makes the Hunter/Jumper sport special?
I think the atmosphere of the sport is what makes the discipline special. Especially in Hawaii, where the circuit is so small, we have to support each other and although there’s tough competition, most people are welcoming, after all, we only really show for fun and some adrenaline.
Do you show outside of Hawaii?
I’ve luckily had the opportunity to show twice outside of Hawaii— both held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. In 2016 I participated in CPI and earlier this year at Gold Coast with the Far West Farm family.
