The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University is celebrating the academic achievements of its students, and particularly those students in the Class of 2019, with its 17th annual Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Research today. The public is invited to attend.

Friday, April 5, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Wilkes Honors College, FAU Jupiter
Alex Keene, Ph.D., an associate professor of biological sciences in FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science recently organized the Sixth Annual Astyanax International Meeting (AIM) in Juriquilla, Querétaro, Mexico.

The meeting brings together international labs to present and discuss research that utilizes cavefish as a model system to investigate diverse traits and behaviors including sleep, stress, metabolism and heart regeneration.

Erik Duboue, Ph.D., and Johanna Kowalko, Ph.D., both assistant professors of biology in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and trainees from the Cavefish Tri-Lab presented their research using the blind Mexican cavefish.
Johanna Kowalko, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, was invited to speak at the Journal of Experimental Biology Symposium 2019: Genome editing for comparative physiology , which took place in Il Cicalino, Massa Marittima, Italy.

Dr. Kowalko presented, The genetic basis of behavioral variation in natural populations, in which she discussed how her lab is using Mexican cavefish to identify the relationship between the evolution of pigmentation, brain neurochemistry and behavior. The symposium gathered investigators representing a wide array of disciplines, united by their use of emerging techniques.
Nearly 30 Neurosquad members, including undergraduates, graduates, faculty and staff from FAU Brain Institute, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research volunteered at the event held at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium on Sunday. Children and their families participated in virtual reality demos', dressed up like neuroscientists and toured the new, "Journey Through the Human Brain" exhibit. More than 1,500 people visited the museum during the annual event, part of "Brainy Days."
While the clot-busting drug, tPA, has been the gold standard to treat stroke for decades, researchers from  Florida Atlantic University’s  Schmidt College of Medicine and Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s ( BRRHMarcus Neuroscience Institute are taking treatment options to the next level.

Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., distinguished professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine and member of the FAU Brain Institute joined forces with BRRH to combine a breakthrough interventional procedure for stroke with a novel drug compound that has neuroprotective properties.

Florida Atlantic University serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students at sites throughout its six-county service region in southeast Florida. FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus , located in downtown Abacoa offers a variety of upper-division and graduate course. The campus houses the Academy for Community Inclusion , Center for Autism and Related Disabilities , College of Education , Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College , John D. MacArthur Campus Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute , the largest lifelong learning program in the nation. FAU Jupiter unites scientists and students in research and training programs and leverages FAU’s close affiliations with Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute , also located on the campus. As part of this effort, the university-wide Brain Institute launched in 2016 and is a hub of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary neuroscience activity that builds on existing neuroscience centers and programs within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine , Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology offers research and training programs in molecular biology and biotechnology and serves as a link between FAU and other institutions and industries in this field.
