Ning Quan, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at  Florida Atlantic University’s Brain Institute and  Schmidt College of Medicine discovered that hyaluronic acid may be the key in how an immune signal moves from the blood stream to the brain, activating the brain’s resident immune cells, the microglia.

This unsuspected molecule may be the main signal passed between these cells, and this new discovery could lead to novel opportunities to shut down brain inflammatory responses. Findings from this study have important implications for better treatments for stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, as well as head injuries.

This research is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health (R01-MH-109165) awarded to Quan.
FAU has achieved full accreditation from AAALAC International, the world’s premier organization setting accountability standards for the care of laboratory animals.

“AAALAC accreditation shows FAU’s commitment to the well-being of the animals in our teaching and research programs,” said Sylvia Gografe, D.V.M., Ph.D., attending veterinarian and director of comparative medicine.

Moving forward, AAALAC accreditation will increase the visibility of the university’s research program nationally and internationally, and help obtain funding from both public and private sources.
An international conference on Plato's metaphysics hosted by FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College in spring of 2018 recently led to the publication of several papers.

The Internal Plato Society's Plato Journal recently published a dossier of selected papers from the 2018 conference edited by Nicholas Baima Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Sophia Stone, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Lynn University.
FAU Jupiter Requests
Do you have an announcement, news item, published work or an FAU Jupiter event that you would like to see in this newsletter, the FAU Jupiter website or on our social channels? You can now submit your request through our convenient ticket system. Please allow at least one week for your request to be processed by staff.

As a reminder, the FAU Jupiter newsletter is sent every Friday to *only* FAU faculty and staff. On the last Friday of every month, we send out an external newsletter to FAU faculty/staff and the community to highlight the campus and your accomplishments. You may see previous news shared during this time.
The FAU Northern Campuses team is available to work with you on creating the most effective communications material to meet your objectives, budget, and schedule.

The design and approval process generally takes 2-3 weeks; this does not include printing time. The time required to complete a project will vary depending on the size and complexity.

MacArthur Campus , located in downtown Abacoa offers a variety of upper-division and graduate course. The campus houses the Academy for Community Inclusion , Center for Autism and Related Disabilities , College of Education , Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College , John D. MacArthur Campus Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute , the largest lifelong learning program in the nation. FAU Jupiter unites scientists and students in research and training programs and leverages FAU’s close affiliations with Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute , also located on the campus. As part of this effort, the university-wide Brain Institute launched in 2016 and is a hub of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary neuroscience activity that builds on existing neuroscience centers and programs within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine , Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology offers research and training programs in molecular biology and biotechnology and serves as a link between FAU and other institutions and industries in this field.
