Ning Quan, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at
Florida Atlantic University’s Brain Institute and
Schmidt College of Medicine discovered that hyaluronic acid may be the key in how an immune signal moves from the blood stream to the brain, activating the brain’s resident immune cells, the microglia.
This unsuspected molecule may be the main signal passed between these cells, and this new discovery could lead to novel opportunities to shut down brain inflammatory responses. Findings from this study have important implications for better treatments for stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, as well as head injuries.
This research is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health (R01-MH-109165) awarded to Quan.

FAU has achieved full accreditation from AAALAC International, the world’s premier organization setting accountability standards for the care of laboratory animals.
“AAALAC accreditation shows FAU’s commitment to the well-being of the animals in our teaching and research programs,” said Sylvia Gografe, D.V.M., Ph.D., attending veterinarian and director of comparative medicine.
Moving forward, AAALAC accreditation will increase the visibility of the university’s research program nationally and internationally, and help obtain funding from both public and private sources.

An international conference on Plato's metaphysics hosted by FAU's
Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College in spring of 2018 recently led to the publication of several papers.
The Internal Plato Society's
Plato Journal recently published a dossier of selected papers from the 2018 conference edited by Nicholas Baima Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Sophia Stone, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Lynn University.
