RESUME TIP OF THE MONTH

Ideally, your resume should be pointed toward conveying why you are the perfect candidate for one specific job or job title. Good advertising is directed toward a very specific target audience and putting yourself in the shoes of the person hiring is the most important step in writing a resume that markets you rather than describe your history.

Ask yourself: What would make someone the perfect candidate? What does the employer really want? What special abilities would this person have? What would set a truly exceptional candidate apart from a merely good one?

INTERVIEW TIP OF THE MONTH

Follow-up after interview

A follow-up is a simple email thanking the interviewer for taking the time to speak with you. A follow-up helps you build rapport with an interviewer and lets them know you are a professional and comfortable communicating in a professional setting. Most importantly though, a good follow-up makes sure you stay top of mind when an interviewer makes the difficult decision of selecting who gets the job and who doesn’t. When done politely and thoughtfully, they will leave a lasting positive impression. Please take some hints from the following example:

Dear …..

Thanks for taking the time to interview me today. It was really interesting to learn about your organisation…………………. It is exactly the kind of opportunity I have been looking for to……………… If given a chance, I’d do……………. .

Please let me know if you would like any references and thanks again for your consideration.

Kind Regards

JOB PRODUCTIVITY TIP OF THE MONTH

If you want to learn new skills from your supervisor, instead of saying "Can you teach me ..............?" say, "Can I help you with ............?"

Scratch their back so they can scratch yours!

HOST COMPANY OF THE MONTH

Holiday Inn Darling Harbour

They have been hosting interns in their finance and marketing teams for years and several of the interns were retained for ongoing employment after internship.

Recently, upon our invitation, their Hotel Manager and Executive Chef participated in a Career Seminar at one of our partner education providers. They presented the benefits of working in the hospitality industry and the opportunities on offer. They will start hosting commercial cookery students for work placement from January 2021.

We are very thankful to them for giving young students a chance to succeed.

INTERN OF THE MONTH

Rakesh Kethu - IT Graduate

How did you benefit from the internship?
The internship helped me gain skills required to kick start my professional career in the Australian corporate market which otherwise wouldn’t be possible. I got to know the office culture and the common etiquettes required to be part of a professional team. After 3 months of my internship, I was offered a full-time position by the company.

What did you learn on the job?
Though it was an intern role, I had a chance to work on some real-time projects with the help of a mentor. I had ample time to learn about the job profile and day to day routines. Mentor was very helpful in answering any questions related to the job throughout the internship period.

What role did Studyandwork play in helping you enter the industry?
Studyandwork provided exceptional service in reviewing my CV and explaining to me the options I have moving forward and the current job market in the city I am living in. Once they understood my academic background and my interests, they arranged an interview with an ASX listed company within Melbourne. The company liked my profile and after the interview, they hired me for an internship role that lasted for 3 months. Later the same company offered me a full-time position.

Have you recommended the internship to anyone? If not, would you?
Yes, I’ve recommended Studyandwork to my friends and fellow graduates from my university.

How would you summarise the experience as a whole?
My experience as a whole was exceptional right from the start to the first day in the office. Studyandwork kept taking my feedback right throughout the internship until I was offered a full-time position.

Were you offered a job after the internship?
Yes.

Are there any further comments you would like to add?
To the prospective candidates who’re looking for an internship, I would advise them to know about the company before they’re going to an interview and to ask the right questions to the potential employer.

About STUDYANDWORK

We are Australia’s first recruitment agency devoted to students and graduates that specializes in internships, traineeships, and graduate job placements. While most recruitment agencies say NO to job applications from inexperienced candidates, we say WHY NOT? We and our valued host companies go by the “Hire for Attitude, Train for Skills” philosophy.

We help students and graduates get over the frustration of the paradoxical situation: You need a job to get experience and you need the experience to get a job. We place them in a suitable internship or graduate job for work experience and make sure that they get the best out of the opportunity, resulting in their career success.

We help students and graduates transition from their studies to a job by tapping into their skills to meet the staffing needs of Australian businesses cost-effectively and efficiently. Due to our proven successful business model, we have been able to match more than 5,000 students and graduates with over 2,000 Australian and multinational companies since 2007.
Thank you for your ongoing and outstanding support of STUDYANDWORK throughout 2020.
We know how challenging 2020 was for everyone across Australia and we certainly couldn’t have achieved our goal of delivering high-quality internships and jobs to our candidates without your amazing and steadfast support.
We wish both our clients and candidates a safe and enjoyable holiday season, and we look forward to working with you in a safer and healthier 2021.
