Quick News for Wednesday, July 25

Ecumenical Planning Session

In the last ecumenical planning session, we established a tentative date for the conference on prayer to be conducted on November 3, 2018, in Essex.  We also adopted a draft outline of the schedule for the day.  It is still open for modification.  The potential participants are any individuals from the region who want to learn about Christian prayer.  Between now and the next meeting on Monday, September 17th, at 9:45 a.m., the group will study and discuss by email options for worship to be approved at the next meeting.

All meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend.

Stretch out Your Hand - Exploring Healing Prayer

Our class is meeting weekly and has come up with these questions about healing prayer.  Our list was compiled in the "faith" that the more we engage with our questions, the deeper God will lead us into faith.  The first six questions are more existential and the last three are more practical. Like the father who asked for his son's healing and said, "I believe; help my unbelief (Mark 9: 14-29)," we enter into healing prayer without all our questions answered!
  • What if there is no God?
  • How does your relationship with God affect your attitude towards healing?
  • Why aren't we wondrous about all healing (brought about by prayer, medicine, naturally)?
  • What's the difference between faith and wishful thinking?  Between mystery and magic?
  • Where is God's fairness?  What is the relationship between fairness, forgiveness, and gratitude?
  • Where do we find faith in the midst of questions?  Do we need faith for healing?
  • What is the role of intention (goal) and healing?
  • How does healing prayer fit into other forms of prayer?
  • How can we be shaped into a healing community?  What does a healing community look like?
To the members of the Healing Prayer Class, Thank You! for allowing your questions to be shared with the congregation.

Lyn Barrett is a very gifted teacher, facilitator and retreat leader. We are very fortunate to have such a talented and compassionate leader in our congregation.

Holy Day July 31st, Ignatius of Loyola , Priest, Monastic and Founder of the Society of Jesus, 1556.

Ignatius was born into a noble family in 1491. Up to his twenty-sixth year, he was a man given over to the vanities of the world and took special delight in the exercise of arms with the aim of winning glory. In the Battle of Pamplona in 1521 he was seriously wounded and during his convalescence Ignatius experienced a profound spiritual awakening.

Ignatius was an unschooled layman and at the age of 37 began to study theology at the University of Paris in preparation for the priesthood. While at the University of Paris he together with six others took vows of strict poverty and vows to serve the needs of the poor. Thus, what later came to known as the Society of Jesus was born.

In 1540 the Society was formally recognized, Ignatius died July 31 in the simple room which served as a bedroom and chapel, His live and teaching, as Evelyn Underhill and others have acknowledged, represent the best of the Counter-Reformation.

Let Us Pray:

Almighty god, from whom all good things come: You called Ignatius of Loyola to service. Inspired by his example, and strengthened by his companionship, may we labor without counting the cost. I ask for this in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen
