PLAYGROUND DETROIT

A Difficult Pair
In "A Difficult Pair," Detroit artists Victoria Shaheen and George Vidas use materials associated with industrial and commercial applications to probe questions of identity, hierarchy, and material culture. Shaheen uses commodity culture, image saturation and the history of decorative arts and design to create contemporary environments that deconstruct hierarchies, expose absurdity in social systems, and simply make viewers laugh. Vidas also uses humor to convey witty concepts and ideas through his neon work.

Opening Reception, Saturday July 21st,
6-9pm  [MacDougal-Hunt, Detroit]

Daybreak
Holding House will be showcasing the paintings of Dustin London in a solo exhibition, "Daybreak". Signals of information marked with repeated intervals of paint shows Londons' preference for mesmeric processes. London presents the value of accumulation in a series of chromatic oil paintings. Through planned layers of color, the paintings resolve into a playful landscape of shape and form.

Opening Reception, Saturday July 21st,
6-9pm.   [Southwest, Detroit]
3546 Michigan Ave.

Breath Exchange with JeSung Lee
Join our second Summer Resident, JeSung Lee, in a Breath Exchange. Using balloons as a tool for exchange, he has been trading breath with strangers in lieu of the traditional handshake, wave, or head nod. This seemingly childish ritual-and its residual by-product-is an opportunity to re-think social interactions in public spaces at the micro level. Lee is a South Korean architect working through low-tech/high tech prosthetic devices to investigate what it means to experience the world through another person's body and senses.

Opening Reception, Thursday July 19th,
6-9pm.  [Pontiac]
