Happy summer! As July arrives, the Museum offers a bounty of opportunities for you: great exhibitions, gallery talks, musical programming, and daily tours at 1:30 pm. Come experience the coast of Maine through the eyes of Winslow Homer, with the recently opened exhibition,
Winslow Homer and the Camera: Photography and the Art of Painting. The elegant abstractions of Richard Pousette-Dart and treasures from Bowdoin's permanent collection offer beautiful counterpoints. An early July lecture by Robert Wellington provides an exciting prelude to
A Handheld History: Five Centuries of Medals from the Molinari Collection at Bowdoin College, while presentations later in the month bring new insights to the art of Homer and Pousette-Dart. The month closes with musical reflections on works of art from budding composers participating in the Bowdoin International Music Festival.
See you at the Museum!

OPENING SOON
A Handheld History: Five Centuries of Medals from the Molinari Collection at Bowdoin College
A Handheld History marks the first time since 1976 that the Museum's prestigious Molinari Medals Collection has been the subject of a dedicated exhibition. Organized by Bowdoin students Amber Orosco '19, Stephen Pastoriza '19, and Benjamin Wu '18, this installation allows viewers to experience the intimacy and poignancy of portrait medals spanning nearly five centuries and to consider the lessons they have to impart to contemporary audiences.

Winslow Homer and the Camera: Photography and the Art of Painting
This exhibition explores the question of Homer's relationship with the medium of photography and its impact on his artistic practice. As one attuned to appearances and how to represent them, Homer understood that photography, as a new visual technology, had much to reveal. This exhibition adds an important new dimension to our appreciation of this pioneering American painter, demonstrating his recognition that photography did not undermine, but instead complemented his larger artistic interests.

Behind the Cases: Student Curators Prepare for Upcoming Exhibition,
A Handheld History
A Handheld History
: Five Centuries of Medals from the Molinari Collection at Bowdoin College
marks the first time since 1976 that the Bowdoin College Museum of Art's prestigious Molinari medals have been the subject of a dedicated exhibition. Donated to the Museum over fifty years ago, between 1966 and 1967, the collection reflects the generosity of Cesare and Amanda Molinari. As this show demonstrates, their gift of over 1,500 medals and plaquettes, together with a remarkable library of related resources, further inspired the continued study and acquisition of medals at the Museum, further enhancing Bowdoin's already impressive holdings.

Interview with Derek Bermel, Artistic Director of the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall
Could you please tell us a little bit about your background and your role at the Bowdoin International Music Festival?
I'm composer-in-residence at the festival. My first experience at BIMF, more than 20 years ago, was as a composition student! Eight years ago I was first invited as a faculty member, and I've returned every summer since. I enjoy working with such talented students from all over the world. However, my role at the festival extends beyond teaching and includes curating the Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music, designing the composition program, helping to invite guest composers, and planning interesting new projects, like the one on which we're embarking with the Museum this year.
