Extended care is available from 12 noon until 6 pm.
Parents must register their children for
extended care on minimum days before Friday May 18th, by sending an email to
EXTENDED CARE if you cannot pick up your child by 12 noon.
There is no Girard Gourmet school lunch service, so if your child is staying in extended care, please provide a lunch. Children who are not picked up by noon will go to the lunch area. Please pick up your children in the lunch area for K-8 and from the playground in preschool.

The "Fête de la Bretagne / Gouel Breizh" at SDFAS - May 26th

The Breizh Amerika collective will perform a 2 hours set of Celtic music mixed with Swing, Jazz, Latin and Folk music.
They might even teach the audience Breton dances.

At SDFAS, we strive to provide the best education to our students. Our students not only thrive academically, they are also mindful of the potential positive impact they have on our communities and world. During the forum, the 3rd grade students presented their hopes and dreams in both French and English. The students also beautifully song "Pourquoi C'est Beau" and "
Rainbow Connection".

The Snails in Kindergarten
|
A few days ago, while we were observing the snails moving around in the snail house, we saw some snails climbing on the pine cone. Some of us wondered if the snails could go on even sharper surfaces. This morning, we decided to create a board with pointy things from the classroom and observed if the snails would go on them without being hurt.
We made the conclusion that the snails had something that we do not have because otherwise we could also walk barefooted on sharp surfaces, but what do they have that we don't? We observed the board and found the solution to the problem: the snails produce a mucus to move around and that mucus is what protects them!

Box Tops coupons are found on a variety of products' packaging and look like the picture above.
Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10 cents. Schools can collect them and send them in twice a year in exchange for a check.
At SDFAS, Box Tops coupons used to be collected in each class room. This year, all Box Tops coupons should be dropped in the Box Tops jar at the front desk.
Next collection will be on June 8, so remember to bring all your coupons in before that date.

Pre-Elementary: Parent's day

Our PK0 to PK2 celebrated SDFAS parents on Friday May 11th. All of our students prepared delicious snacks for their parents and had some surprises for them. They proudly performed for their special guests.
Thank you all for your support and dedication all year long for all of our SDFAS programs. One day is not enough to express our gratitude!

Kindergarten and 1st Grade share some special time

Last week,
the Kindergarten students shared some special time with the 1st grade students. They discovered the 1st grade class environment, the books they use, class routines, and were able to have their free time in the elementary playground with the 1st graders. It was a very moving moment for them!

Our students are indeed multi-talented. They demonstrate their talents on a regular basis through different programs and events all year round. This time of year in particular gives us all the chance to appreciate the many talented young people in our school community. Not only are our students skilled linguists but they also perform as artists, musicians, thespians, actors, athletes, cinematographers, writers, debaters and directors.
From the Art Show, presentations by La Troupe (Middle School Theater Company), presentation of the Three Little Pigs in Spanish to Preschoolers by the Middle School Spanish Theater Elective class, the 2
nd
Annual SDFAS Short Film Festival, the Junior Olympics at La Jolla High School, Sports Leagues Track and Field championships, and the Model JMUN event, to the Fête de la Musique and end of year shows -- to name only some of the more prominent events happening these days at SDFAS -- our students are engaged in 100% whole-child learning.
Indeed, at SDFAS we believe that music, art, theater and sports are an essential part of our program through which our students learn important skills like the value of practice and preparation, experimentation, testing one's limits, collaboration, teamwork and communication. We also know that through these types of activities our students build self-confidence and forge their identities.
The school will continue to cultivate and enhance these and other SDFAS programs like them. It is extremely beneficial for our students to share their motivation, passion, love of learning and creativity with others. Please enjoy all of these wonderful events and take note of how very talented are our SDFAS students. They certainly make us proud!

Nos élèves sont effectivement très talentueux. Ils en font régulièrement la démonstration dans le cadre de différents programmes et événements tout au long de l'année. Cette période de l'année en particulier permet à toute la communauté scolaire d'apprécier les nombreux talents de nos jeunes gens. Non seulement nos élèves sont des linguistes doués, mais ils sont aussi artistes, musiciens, comédiens, acteurs, athlètes, cinéastes, écrivains, débatteurs et réalisateurs.
De l'exposition d'art aux représentations de La Troupe (Compagnie théâtrale du collège), du spectacle des Trois Petits Cochons en espagnol présenté aux élèves de maternelle par la classe avancée d'espagnol du collège, du Second Festival de Films Courts de SDFAS aux Olympiades Junior de La Jolla High School, de l'événement Model JMUN à la Fête de la Musique et aux spectacles de fin d'année -- pour ne nommer que quelques événements marquants se déroulant en ce moment à SDFAS -- nos élèves sont impliqués à 100% dans un apprentissage complet.
En effet, à SDFAS, nous sommes convaincus que la musique, l'art, le théâtre et les sports sont une part essentielle de notre programme, car ils permettent à nos élèves d'acquérir des compétences comme les valeurs de l'entraînement et de la préparation, de la collaboration, du travail en équipe et de la communication. Nous savons aussi qu'à travers ce type d'activités, nos élèves construisent leur confiance en eux et forgent leur identité.
SDFAS continuera à développer et renforcer ce type de programmes. Ils permettent aux élèves de partager leur motivation, leur passion, leur goût d'apprendre et de créer avec les autres et ce partage leur est extrêmement bénéfique. Profitez de tous ces merveilleux événements, et vous aussi, vous remarquerez combien les élèves de SDFAS sont talentueux. Nous sommes assurément très fiers d'eux !

La fête de l'art c'est maintenant !
Do not forget to visit the Art work of our students in the auditorium.
The SDFAS Art Fair took place from May 14th-18th as a positive space to proudly display our finest art work. There were 73 entries in the Art Fair this year from students and teachers from pre K, elementary and middle school. A variety of materials were used by the artists including paint, paper, canvas, clay, recycled materials, wood, paper plates, pencils, clear tape, sunflower seeds, plaster, silk flowers, origami paper and even Shopkin toys! Excitement and joy buzzed around the auditorium-turned-museum as others viewed the work of our talented students and staff.

| Pre-Elementary: Science Challenge in PK1 |
It is never too early to begin to integrate academic and intellectual learning. Laying the foundation for the development of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) skills at the early childhood level is critical to helping students to develop the necessary thinking and collaborating skills that they will need later.
Our PK1 & 2 classes participated in a science challenge with the AEFE network of French school in North America. For the "défi science" they had to make 3 objects: one that shows the presence of the wind, one that shows the wind's direction and one that can measure the wind's strength. In previous posts, we followed their observations and experiments.
 Our students started first to investigate/explore questions: How to move a feather without touching it? They came back with a lot of solutions: blowing, slapping the table with their hands, stomping right next to the feather (mixed results with that one). Then they discovered a few tools and tried them with the same objective: moving the feather without touching it. They tried to trap air in bags, blew through straw to do art, and built a rocket balloon that flew across the room. Like real scientists, they observed, made hypotheses and experimented.

Elementary School: Coding with Bee-Bot
For the last term, thanks to François Tregouet, the 1st Graders are reviewing addition and subtraction through coding with a Bee-Bot (
a programmable floor robot).
The students program a Bee-Bot to navigate a route from a point A to a point B. With this cute Bee, they will refine their space awareness and their French spelling skills.
Students work in small groups (2 or 3) and learn to share ideas, s
teps to go from point A to point B. They take turns to code and they learn to so
lve problems through trial and error. 1st Graders are very motivated and happy to be part of this experience.

Middle School: SDFAS introduces 1:1 program

SDFAS is excited to introduce a 1:1 program for all students from 5th-8th grade. Starting in 2018/2019, every SDFAS Middle School and 5th grade student will be assigned a "Google Chromebook" which will stay with the studen
t until they graduate from SDFAS. The Chromebooks will stay with the students and Middle School students will even take their devices home with them. Our philosophy is to provide our older students at SDFAS with a 21st century learning tool and to teach them how to use it wisely and in a disciplined way. The initiative builds off of our current and re
gular use of computers in classes. It is not our intention to teach in a manner that leads to students being glued to
screens all day long at school or at home. Digital

d Internet use will be a central focus of the program. The program will be rolled out after this year's summer break and is financed by the annual fund as well as through a marginal tech fe

Middle School Math Club
:
Integrating 3D printing in the learning experience
François Tregouët recently presented the SDFAS 3D printer to the students of the Math club. The goal for students is to learn how to effectively integrate 3D printing in their learning process by effectively building/making elements/objects.
This is a great opportunity to apply mathematics to 3D geometry, and also to calculate costs and times of production.
Students will use their coding skills to define the structure and shape of geometric solid shapes. They will also calculate volumes and plastic needed in order to 3D print.
We plan to build a "Menger sponge", working in collaboration with the students enrolled in the Maker Space Elective: our goal is to fix the damaged foosball table, which is in the Middle School recess area.

Elementary School: Exchange between PK1 and 2nd grade

t SDFAS, students can enjoy exchanges with other classes from other grades. These moments of sharing and collaboration favor the development of each student's oral skills. Thus, the PK1 were able to visit the 2
nd
graders, to discover a world famous artist: Frida Kahlo.
The visit of the CE1 to the San Diego Museum was an opportunity for each child to better understand this artist. Now, the whole class is offering a guided tour of Frida Kahlo's universe.
Spoken expression, art history, and cooperation are at the heart of this exchange project which all students really enjoyed.

Pre-elementary: Celebrating interculturality at Chicano Park
Maternelle : Célébration des relations interculturelles
au Parc de Chicano
Our 3 PK1 classes went to Chicano Park located beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, in Barrio Logan. The park is home to the country's largest collection of 72 outdoor graffiti, as well as various sculptures, earthworks, and an architectural piece dedicated to the cultural heritage of the community. Before the field trip, our students had a class museum experience: they created art pieces à la manière de Frida Kahlo and studied details of the various murals.
In the park, they were divided in small groups and armed with pictures; they did a clue hunt to locate the details of their pictures in the graffiti park. To complete their voyage into the Chicano culture, our students, staff and parent volunteers had a "concha" from a panaderia for snack and stopped by Old Town for a tortilla making demonstration and a typical Mexican lunch.

Middle School : Field trip to Wild Willow Farm

grade students had the opportunity to visit a local organic farm, the Wild Willow Farm. Working in small groups, they learned about the benefits of organic culture, how farmers designed the farm with the protection of the environment in mind. They discovered the benefits of growing flowers between cultures, and the benefits of having goats on a farm. These farmers raise worms and make their own compost.
This field trip was a hands-on experience of some of the French Science curriculum content.

Middle School: Spanish Theater Club Performance
Collège : Représentation du Club de Théâtre en Espagnol
On May 10th, 2018, the Middle School students from the Spanish Theater Club performed an adaptation of the Three Little Pigs in Spanish, for the enjoyment of the preschoolers. The adaptation was humorous, inventive, and fun.
What is better than a theater project, which students embraced and took complete ownership of, in order to put language into action?
Congratulations to Chloé, Lilou, Kaylie, Jimmy, Nathalie, Emilia, Nolween, and their Spanish teacher, Ms. Patino for their creativity, hard work and effort, fine acting, and elegant and balanced modesty! It was simply perfect.

Concours J'aime écrire Spécial USA
Bayard-Milan, a French publisher of books and magazines organized a writing contest specifically for French schools in the US.
The 4th grade B and I decided to give it a go. We were given the first chapter of a story and had to imagine what happened next. After several weeks of work during library hour, our students came up with an excellent text, and so did all the schools who participated. We did not win first prize, but each student received a diploma and a pen, and our 4th grade B were featured in this little video.

Middle School Sports League

On Monday, SDFAS hosted the Middle School Sports League Track & Field Championships. 7 schools, with over 70 participants (grades 5 - 8), competed in the 4x100, 1600, 400, 100, 800, 200, 4x500, Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump, and Triple Jump.
Standout 8th graders Lexine Arambulo (1st place: 1600, 800, 4x500), Chloe Gross (1st place: 400, Long Jump, Triple Jump), and Emma Berman (1st place: 100, 200, 4x500) dominated the season and the Championship meet, as they led the girls to a 1st place overall team finish. Fun Fact: The SDFAS Girls Track & Field Team have been undefeated league champions for 5 consecutive years!
Seiji Ayala-Sekiguchi (4x100, 100 4x500), Dante Schrantz (4x100, 1600, 4x500), Nicola Redon (4x100, 100, Triple Jump),
John Guckian (200, 400, 4x500),
and Emil Belhon (400, 800, 4x500) all had outstanding season performances, and medaled in their respective events at the championship meet. The boys team finished the season in 2nd place.
Girls Basketball:

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team played with intensity and heart this season, defeating Neslon Middle Years, Soille Hebrew Day, The Grauer School and Encinitas Country Day. The team qualified for the Play-Offs and finished the season in 4th place overall.
Boys Soccer:
The Varsity Boys Soccer Team did an excellent regular season losing only one game and finishing at 1st place overall.
Two days ago, our boys won 2-1 again Soille Hebrew Day and they will play the Finals today,
Thursday May 17th at 3:30pm at SDFAS
again Encinitas Country Day.
