PA News

Dear Parents,

The P.A. received one nomination only for Secretary --Ifah Grady-- and she will therefore this June assume a two-year term in that position without an election being necessary. For the position of Vice President, no new nominations were received; therefore, Celine Theano will in June begin a second two-year term in that role. Lydia Inostroza will begin the final year of her term as President beginning this June. Finally, Keri Belhon will begin the final year of her term as Treasurer this June. The school thanks outgoing Secretary Amy Allemann for her many years of dedicated service to the P.A. as Secretary. The school thanks the new and returning P.A. Board members for their ongoing service to the school.

Please note that the P.A. budget and revised bylaws are available for download on the P.A. page of the protected parent portal on the school's website.

The P.A. welcomes volunteers to serve on committees or as chairs for its many events:  back-to-school picnic, marché de Noël, talent show, French-and-English book fair, teacher appreciation week & luncheon and kermesse. If interested, please contact a P.A. Board member. We look forward to seeing many of you at the first Plenary meeting in September, if not before !

 Best regards,

Mark Rosenblum on behalf of the P.A. Board

Box Tops Collection

Box Tops coupons are found on a variety of products' packaging and look like the picture above.
Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10 cents. Schools can collect them and send them in twice a year in exchange for a check.
At SDFAS, Box Tops coupons used to be collected in each class room. This year, all Box Tops coupons should be dropped in the Box Tops jar at the front desk.
Next collection will be on June 8, so remember to bring all your coupons in before that date.

Thank you!

Second Prize for The Chess Peace movie!
Nos Etudiants ont remporté le 2ème prix pour leur court métrage

"Chess Peace" is a beautiful, elegant, smart, profound and powerful 15-minute movie on the theme "Peace in War Time"

It is my honor and with distinct pride that I announce that SDFAS (San Diego French American School) and GPSSD (German Pacific School of San Diego) have been awarded second prize in the « Tandem » category in the 2018 Eustory competition!

The Chess Peace movie was in competition with 133 other entries.  There will be an award ceremony in Paris on June 18, 2018 at the German Embassy. Alexandra, our Director of of Photography,  will represent SDFAS at the award ceremony, accompanied by Sofia and her parents representing GPSSD.

Congratulations to all students, staff, professionals and parents who were part of the project; for their investment, fantastic teamwork and energy throughout the 7 month process!

I am very grateful to each of them for this unique experience. I would also like to thank SDFAS for its support along the way!

Junior Model United Nations Club at the San Diego Conference

Pictured: Seiji, Patricia - Maya, Ellie - Ava, Emeraude and Angelina.

On Wednesday, May 23, and on Thursday, May 24, 2018, the JMUN Club spent two days at the 41st San Diego Regional Junior Model United Nations conference at the University of San Diego. Our delegates were more than ready as they boarded the bus with their teacher, Ms. Aseltine. This was a really big event for the students and their teacher, and it represented all of the hard work that they have put in this year.

At the conference, our JMUN squad represented the nations of Ukraine and France on various United Nations Committees. They fiercely debated global issues ranging from providing better healthcare access to refugees from Yemen and Syria, to solving human trafficking in Uzbekistan, to addressing gender inequality around the world. They all then had to solve a surprise global crisis, involving Russian meddling in numerous national elections and a potential war on the Georgian-Turkish border supported by Russian troops. Needless to say, it was a thoroughly exhausting but incredibly rewarding experience for our students. They were able to collaborate and problem solve with hundreds of other middle and high schoolers from the greater San Diego region.

SDFAS had three delegates who received commendations in their committees; Ellie Coalier, Maya Satterberg, and Seiji Ayala-Sekiguchi. SDFAS had one student who received an Outstanding Delegate Award and was selected as the Repertoire for her committee; Emma Berman. Emma delivered a fantastic speech to the entire General Assembly at the end of the conference. For a club our size, to have four awards in one session is a pretty phenomenal achievement, considering some clubs have upwards of 50 or 60 participants.

Thank you to Teresa Sekiguchi for the beautiful pictures taken before and during the conference. It was an excellent two days and I am already excited for next year's conference. Thank you everyone for your support of this club and your flexibility with students who may have missed some classes. It means the world to them!

Congratulation to the JMUN club, and thank you to Ms. Aseltine for guiding the students through the process and all of the hard (but very rewarding) work!
Pre-Elementary: Orienteering
Maternelle : Course d'orientation

Pictured: Yannick, Octavia and Daniel - Maximilian, Zoe and Axl.

Now that we are almost in elementary school, we started to learn spatial awareness skills from a map. We worked with the other two classes. We were in groups of three students and we had to explore different areas (the field, the big playground and the small playground) through a paper representation.

The teachers had hidden some colored pine cones and using the map, we needed to find them as quickly as possible. To make things a little trickier but also more fun, the teachers has drawn one of the pine cones on the map but did not hide it. We had to find the one that was missing.

We did really well and we loved the hunt!
Middle School: Fractions Clinic in 7th grade

Pictured: Lily

Thank you to Ms. Jacoway, the US Science and US Math teacher in Middle School, for initiating a « Fractions Clinic » boot camp in 7th grade! A group of 7th graders came for 4 intensive sessions of fraction practice for 4 Fridays at 8 am and sharpened their fraction skills. This clinic was recommended and implemented in order to ensure a stronger fraction foundation before the students move on to 8th grade next year.

Pre-Elementary: Structured block play: Introduction of 3D
Maternelle : Introduction de la 3D avec des blocks

Pictured: Shaheen and Eleanore

Our PK1 classes were asked to reproduce a structure from a model or blueprint. It is a challenging activity that boosts spatial learning. Building structures encourages a child to test spatial relationships and mentally rotate objects in the mind's eye. It also helps in the development of hand eye coordination. Learning math concepts through manipulation and games is the best way to make our young children curious and motivated to master a concept. Learning should always be fun!
Elementary School: Field Trip to RawHide Ranch
Elémentaire : Viste au RawHide Ranch

Every year, the 4th graders go to an overnight field trip. For the last five years, children have gone to Rawhide Ranch, in Bonsall.

This year, Cathleen Anderson and Sophie Nehoua's students spent three days and two nights at the camp. Children enjoyed taking care of the animals, learning more about horses, riding, vaulting, team building, treasure hunting, climbing... and many more fun activities.

This experience will stay in their memory and will prepare them for more challenges and discoveries next year.
Pre-Elementary: Field Trip to Wild Willow Farm
Maternelle : Sortie scolaire à la ferme de Wild Willow

Pictured: Axl and Audrey.

The Kindergarten went to Wild Willow Farm and they had so much fun! They learned so many things about vegetables, fruits, plants, insects and they were given tips on what we can do to preserve our environment.
They picked and ate strawberries, peas and even ate some flower petals!

* Funded by the Annual Fund/Giving Week.
Middle School: Field Trip to Cabrillo National Monument
Collège : Visite du Cabrillo National Monument

On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, as part of an interdisciplinary project conducted by Ms. Jacoway in US Science and Ms. Aseltine in English Language Arts, the 7th graders had an opportunity to visit the Cabrillo National Monument. They were tasked to identify several elements of park maintenance and restoration related to the different ecosystems that can be found in the park. They especially enjoyed exploring the tide pools!

Thank you to both teachers for this purposeful, well crafted and articulated project-based learning experie n ce!

La Troupe: Middle School French Theater Company

On May 21 and on May 24, 2018, La Troupe performed their adaptation of "La Methode" by Sabine Revillet. The quality of the performance was topnotch, and reflected the hard work and efforts than were put in place throughout the school year: good acting presence on stage, perfect tone and voice, the play was a delight to watch.

Et vous, lisez La Méthode...

Congratulations to Ms. Addo, whose firm and talented guidance enabled students to grow and shine on stage!
Congratulations to Chloe, Nathalie, Valentina, Emilia, Cameron, Lily, Jade, Emil, Gregoire, Philippine, Apolline, Juliette, Leonie and Anouk!
