107 Installations in Cambodia

Our Latrines For Life program is currently doing very well in Cambodia, with many families enjoying its benefits. There has been a lot of activity in these past many months since the last newsletter in December. Our total latrine/tippy-tap installation count now stands at 107, with water filters having been provided to 46 families. Below we see a selection of the most recent photos for last month along with an explanation describing each element of an installation.

The main structure is seen here being constructed for the Kar
Kim   family. The enclosure surrounds a ceramic squatting
toilet on a  raised base with a pipe directing waste into the
                                            two pits at the back.

Here we see the two pits behind the main structure. Final adjustments are being made by members on the Kar Kim family. Each recipient family makes the commitment to assist with construction as much as possible.

The Mol Rith family poses for the completion of their installation, as
our LfL director, Suy Leang, points out the plaque which is typically attached to recognize the donor.

The second element of the installation is the tippy-tap hand washing
station, which provides running water and soap to wash hands. Here we see the Or Ya family learn hand washing at their tippy-tap station.

To encourage hand washing every latrine site now has the
above sanitation instruction sign posted.

Children from the Pen Yorn family learn hand washing, and receive instructions from the sanitation poster soon to be posted on the
outside of the latrine structure.

The third element of the installation is a ceramic water filter to provide clean drinking water. Here Pen Yorn and his family receive their water filter.

The water filter is comprised of two parts. The ceramic pot fits into the top of the plastic container where the clean water collects. The ceramic pot is designed with a special process, and made in
Cambodia.

Here we see the wife of Mol Rith, happy to receive her water filter.

Latrines for Life

Building latrines is an issue that many people clearly recognize as important and are willing to support. We're continuing to respond through the Latrines For Life program. To date there have been 107 latrine installations constructed for poor rural families. We want to do a lot more. Pictured below we see the Chen Paul family in front of the newly constructed latrine and Tippy-tap soap hand washing station.

Hi Everybody!

It's been a while since my last newsletter. Yes, time moves along when you're busy. And, indeed, we have been busy in Cambodia. Every month we have continued to find needy families that can benefit from our program. They make their commitment to assist, and process begins to provide them with an installation.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we have expanded the program by making a ceramic water filter available, free of charge, to the recipient families so they can have a good supply of clean drinking water. It's the final step of a three level plan for each installation:
   1) a latrine
   2) hand washing
   3) clean water.

Check the photos to the left and you'll see how the three elements are organized to make up an installation.

     -----------------

Donations have come from many individuals.
Their enthusiasm of these many donors is a testament to the fact that we're making a real difference for the poor in Cambodia. But we want to do more.

I sincerely hope that many of you will join us and become a sponsor.

    -------------------

Many of you have seen the results we've achieved over the past two and half years, and have decided to make contributions. Some of those donations have been very substantial and will be funding the construction of many latrine installations.

Whether your donation has been for one latrine or for many I want to thank you sincerely on behalf of the recipient families. Every donation makes a significant difference that shows impact.

   --------------------

And, if you plan to shop on Amazon, don't for get to go through Amazon Smiles. It's a perfect way to let your purchases help our cause. It's Amazon's own funds that makes the donation. Just follow my instructions to the left. You'll find it under the video link as you scroll down.

   Latrines For Life

Good sanitation is essential for health and well being, but it's not the norm in rural Cambodia. Old habits of poor hygiene, of using open fields in elimination of body waste, are still wide spread. The result is the contamination of streams and soils, the spread of disease, high rates of infant and young child mortality, and heavy caseloads of diarrhea and other infections. It's this critical issue to which we are turning our full attention. As we improve the health of one family after another the whole community benefits by living among neighbors that have a higher level of sanitation.

The cost for one latrine is $250. If you would like to assist in this area simply click the link below to reach our donate page. It will make a world of difference for a poor family.

Please donate here.

   ------------------

Again, don't forget that easy way to have Amazon donate a little extra cash to our cause. Look to the left and scroll down to see the detail of how it's done. Amazon makes the donation with Amazon dollars, not yours. It's smart, quick and so easy to do.

Take care for now.
