Welcome to our monthly newsletter, where we bring you human interest stories, current events and information on Belize! Mostly, our purpose is to share all the positive and beautiful things about Belize and its people.
The Consulate of Belize in Florida continues to offer Belizean Passports and Emergency Travel Documents. We are also issuing Identification Cards, facilitating many Belizeans living in Florida with the opportunity to hold an official ID from Belize. Acceptance of these cards at U.S. offices and other institutions, however, depends on their discretion.

E INSPIRATION CENTER OF BELIZE
On Monday, April 30th, 2018 at 10:00 am, there was a formal handing over of the funds raised by See and Taste Belize Inc. along with its partners, BELTRAIDE, BTB and NICH at the Inspiration Center, represented by Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women and Children and foundress of the Inspiration Center.
See & Taste Belize Inc. doubled its donation after only the second year due to the joint efforts of its partners, sponsors from Belize and abroad who increased in numbers and support as well as the Belizean Diaspora who came in droves to attend.
The Hon. Consul General of Belize in Florida, and foundress of See and Taste Belize Inc., Janine Sylvestre handed over a check in the amount of $160,000 raised from the festival held in Miami, Florida last October at Florida InternationalUniversity when hundreds of Belizeans and foreigners came to celebrate Belize.
In her remarks, Mrs. Sylvestre said that she was honored and humbled to be able to support the Inspiration Center which cares for Belize's most precious and vulnerable children. She said that she's happy that See & Taste Inc. could offer Belizeans living abroad the opportunity to enjoy all the wonderful things Belize has to offer even if for one day as well as introduce Belize to foreigners.
This one day festival and evening reception had Chefs, Artisans and Bands from Belize showcasing their gastronomical and artistic delights and talents. Bite of Belize, an evening reception hosted by Martin Kredit GM of Turtle Inn, from the Family Coppola Hideaways also contributed to the efforts of See & Taste Belize Inc.
The event is significant in that it represents the efforts from the Belizean diaspora to stay connected with Belize and the growing awareness of Americans in South Florida to Belize and its rich culture represented by its cuisine, art, music and history.
 See & Taste Belize, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help build a healthier and happier life for the children of Belize by inspiring hope and contributing to the well-being of the children by improving their health, education and living conditions through charitable projects and fundraisers. See & Taste Belize, Inc. was established in 2015 with a focus on giving back to the Belizean community while showcasing Belize's art, culture and cuisine.

Belize Intellectual Property Office and World Intellectual Property Day
April 22, 2018 12:13 p.m. EST - The Belize Intellectual Property Office (Belipo) is busy spreading awareness in Belize this month about the importance of legally claiming ownership of one's own intellectual property, especially when it comes to businesses in Belize and marketing their p
roducts and services. This April 26th marks World Intellectual Property Day, which event was established in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, a specialized agency of the international body of the United Nations. Belize Now recently sat down with the Deputy Registrar, Olabimpe Akinkuolie, and the Senior Assistant Registrar, Tracy Cadle, of BELIPO, in an interview above.

Star of The Month
MARTHA PERDOMO-TAYLOR
Mrs. Martha Perdomo-Taylor was born in Belize City, Belize and migrated to Chicago Illinois in 1971.
During her early years in Chicago she focused on advancing her education. She earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Truman College and later earned a Bachelor Degree in accounting and finance from Northeastern University.
She has enjoyed a very successful career as a senior accountant and financial manager for many very well-known companies in the Chicago area and is currently employed by Direct Energy.
Miss Martha as she is affectionally called, is dedicated to serving the Belizean community and has spent the past twelve years serving Belizeans both in Belize as well as in Chicago. She is the Business Manager of the Belize Educational Fund and the Day in the Park Committee; where she works endlessly to fulfill the mission of the organization. She travels to Belize annually on behalf of the committee to award scholarships to several disenfranchised students from various schools throughout the country.
In addition to serving the Belizean community through her work with the Belize Educational Fund and Day in the Park Committee, she also serves on the Board of Directors for Concerned Belizean Inc. She oversees their educational mission by also traveling to Belize to distribute back-packs filled with school supplies for students in Belize City and the surrounding rural areas in the country.
Her service to Belizeans has expanded beyond her work with the organizations and in recent years have independently provided clothing and food to the assist the homeless in Belize, made donations to the Sister Cecilia Senior Home and single mothers in the country. Miss Martha loves her country and believes in giving back to her beautiful Belize.
She resides in Skokie Illinois, with her husband Mr. Gladstone Taylor and is the mother of two beautiful daughters and two wonderful grandchildren.

LIFELINE FOUNDATION HOLDS 12TH ANNUAL GALA
May 31, 2018 2:08 EST- On Saturday, April 28th, 2018, The Lifeline Foundation held its 12th Annual Black and White Gala at the Ramada Princess Hotel and Casino in Belize City. It was an evening of fine dining, musical entertainment, and dancing. The event was made possible thanks to the Founder of the Lifeline Foundation, Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow and her fellow Lifeline sisters. The Honorary Consul of Belize in Florida, Janine Sylvestre-Vega, was present at the event.

Belize Participates In Annual Around The World Embassy Tour In Washington D.C.
April 22, 2018 12:13 p.m. EST - The Embassy of Belize in Washington D.C. participated in "Around The World Embassy Tour," or "Passport D.C." this month. A total of fifty three embassies participated in the annual event and 7,000 visitors visited the Embassy of Belize, which is 2,000 more compared to last year. The embassy showcased Belizean food and music, among its other facets. See the video below for footage of the event. Noteworthy in the tour was the long queue which formed at the Embassy of Belize. Many Belize's and visitors including members of the Diplomatic Corp stopped at the Embassy of Belize, which put forth an impressive display showcasing the best the country has to offer. The persons interviewed rated Belize's event in the top three of all the embassies visited that day. In attendance was the Ambassador of Belize to the U.S. (His Excellency Daniel Gutierez), his spouse (Mrs. Erin Ryan), the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation (Honorable Manuel Heredia), and the Belize Tourism Board Director of Tourism, Mrs. Karen Bevans.

Belize Designated Recipient of OWA Food Festival Fundraiser Proceeds
May 25, 2018 1:28 EST- The Food Festival of The Americas, an event hosted by the Organization of Women of the Americas (OWA) took place this year on May 20, 2018. The purpose of the festival is to fundraise for the empowerment of women and children in the Americas by showcasing the culture and gastronomy of the nation-members of the OAS.
Female ambassadors, wives of ambassadors, and the women or spouses of employees of the OAS comprise the OWA, an active social and charitable group that's been a key part of the social aspect of Washington's diplomatic scene since its founding in 1997.
Since its founding, the group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has concentrated on its fundraising activities.
The Annual Food Festival of the Americas, held on the OAS grounds on May 20, was an event that drew many in the diplomatic community to foods from various countries in the Americas.
The festival is, of course, a fundraising event, with 70 percent of the proceeds going to an NGO in one of the member countries and 30 percent staying in Washington, D.C., given to the OAS's Art Museum of the Americas. The group raised about $20,000 last year and has designated Belize as the main recipient of this year's proceeds of the event.

Recipe of the Month
INGREDIENTS:
Corn Dough: 3-4 cups - corn flour (Maseca brand is best)
Corn Dough: 1/4-1/2 - cup water
Corn Dough: 3-4 Tablespoons - recado rojo
Corn Dough: 1/2 - cup lard or corn oil
Corn Dough: 1 teaspoon baking powder
Corn Dough: 1 teaspoon salt
Filling: Smoked Fish pulled apart and all bones sorted out
Cortido: 2 + cups distilled white vinegar
Cortido: 1 Onion diced
Cortido: 1 Habanero diced
Cortido: Salt to taste
Oil for frying, Vegetable or Coconut Oil
METHOD:
1. Sift together dry ingredients for the corn dough: corn flour, baking powder and salt. Mix in recado and water slowly mixing by hand.
2. Let dough rest for 10-15 minutes, and then form/roll into golf-ball sized balls by hand.
3. Make sure you filling is ready. The filling can be beans, cheese, meat, but today, we are making fish panades! Season smoked fish to taste.
4. Using a tortilla press, press the dough balls into flat disks. It's easiest if you use plastic on either side of the tortilla press. (A ziplock bag cut in half works well).
5. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each round dough disk. Fold dough over and press edges together with fingertips.
6. Once a few of the raw panades are forms, start heating your oil. You want enough oil so that the panades can be covered.
7.When the oil is hot enough, working in batches, place each panada in the oil. It will sizzle immediately.
