Addressing School Shootings

In a statement on the mass shootings at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, NASW urged our leaders to address gun violence in our country as a public health crisis.

This article from NPR discusses how a public health approach can be used to prevent further shootings.

Meanwhile, students from across New Jersey gathered to protest gun violence on the one month anniversary of the shootings in Parkland, FL.

Do you have children who participated in the walkouts? Let us know. NASW-NJ would like to write a feature article about social workers whose children participated in these events.
Ethics of Social Justice Advocacy: From the Micro to the Macro
(5 Ethics CEUs)

April 19, 10:00am - 4:00pm in North Brunswick
Presenter: Christine Heer, Esq, LCSW

Now, more than ever perhaps, the call for social workers to engage in social justice activities is front and center. Whether the focus on international atrocities, or local causes such combating racism, sexism, xenophobia, homo- and transphobia, or religious bigotry, or poverty and environmental issues, social justice is a fundamental component of who we are and what we do. This workshop will explore social justice as a function of social work and will engage the participants in discussions of the ethical concerns that may arise out of this work. Topics will include engaging clients in social justice work, disconnects between social justice efforts and employer limitations, how far should a social worker go in standing up for social justice, and guidelines for addressing ethical decision making and dilemmas in social justice work.

COST: $80 for members, $40 for student members, $110 for non-members

New Medicare Cards Coming Soon

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers
from Medicare cards. Between April 2018 and April 2019, CMS will issue new Medicare cards to all beneficiaries. Each card will include a new unique, randomly assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

Beginning April 2018, clinical social workers who are Medicare providers in private practice will need to update their patient files to include the new MBI number and use it on the CMS-1500 form when submitting a claim. In addition, other systems may need to be updated to accept the new MBI format.

NASW-NJ Offers Testimony on Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill

On March 12, NASW-NJ provided testimony to the Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of a bill ( A-1504) that would allow for aid in dying for the terminally ill (known as Death with Dignity in many states).

NASW-NJ also successfully advocated to expand the definition of "mental health care professional" under this act to include Licensed Clinical Social Workers. The bill passed out of committee on a 5-2 vote and now awaits a hearing in the full Assembly.
