Fund- A- Need Gets Items to Teachers to Help Students Thrive

Info about Fund - A - Need went out in the March 8th newsletter. Fund-A-Need  is  a  STEM PTO fundraiser where the funds raised go directly to the classrooms of our school.

Note from Dr. Karen Johnson
Our STEM PTO has been working hard to launch Fund-a-Need and they are asking for our support. You have the opportunity to choose which items, departments or teachers you would like to support. Let's band together to help STEM PTO show our teachers how much they mean to us, providing them with the resources they need to help our students thrive.

Fund-A-Need ends March 31st. Please consider supporting  Fund- A  Need today. You can donate as little as $20 or $100 or more. Any amount helps.  It's easy to give via the HandBid  website and app .

Here are just a few examples of teachers' needs in the classroom:
  • Dash Robots for Kindergarten
  • Edison Robot Kit for 3rd Grade
  • Community Garden
  • Cue the CleverBots for Middle and High School
  • Portable Lights and Light Board for Middle and High School
Save the Date for the First-ever -- State of STEM

Save the date for April 14th at 10 a.m.  for  the first bi-annual State of STEM. Originally this date was set aside to discuss our SPED program, but on re-evaluation, it's been determined that twice a year the school will hold a State of STEM, to update parents on all departments and future plans.

We will dedicate a good part of the morning to SPED as promised, but will also include the final plans for re-organzation, report on facilities, PTO, SAC, BOD and many other goings on at STEM. We are determined to stay "ahead" of the curve and get as much information out to all families in as timely a manner as possible. We will have an independent facilitator as well as a representative from DCSD.

More to come, but please save the date now!
Reminder about Conferences March 15th, 16th

Elementary Conferences
Elementary teachers sent out information regarding conference sign-up. Conferences are scheduled for 15 minutes and held in the classrooms.

Thursday conferences are from 3:30-6:30 p.m. and Friday conferences from 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for elementary students. Students are encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians and will be sharing their progress and goals. Please contact your student's teacher if you have questions or have not received information related to conferences.

Secondary Conferences
Secondary teachers are available for conferences March 15th from 3:30-6:30 p.m.  and March 16th from 12-3:30 p.m. Click  here to find out where to meet each teacher.   Students must be in attendance with a computer and any relevant course materials to reference. If you are unable to attend, your student has completed a class inventory ("state of the class") on Canvas that they review it with you.  All conferences are drop-in on a first come, first serve basis. Conferences will be limited to 10 minutes to reduce waiting time.  These meetings are a great way to get teacher feedback, but they are optional based on your student's current needs.

Innovation in Action - Learning in Alaska

Talk about innovation in action! High School teacher Dr. Jennifer Campbell-Smith was in Alaska volunteering at the Iditarod Race last week. While there, she connected virtually with a few classes to share her experiences and answer questions. Students even got to see a race dog, how it gets harnessed, and meet others involved in the Race. After connecting with Dr. Campbell-Smith, Kindergarteners built sleds and considered the importance of distributing mass in order to make it easier on the do gs and the mushers.

"It's a privilege to use technology to virtually be in Alaska today!" - Finn Provost, seventh grader

Students excelled in the  regional competition again this year, advancing them to the NHD state contest on  May 5th. Congratulations students and Mr. Cegielski for your hard work and preparation. Stay tuned!
STEM Music Student Shout-Outs!

Senior Collin Piper has shown great musicianship as a guitarist by helping less traditionally experienced musicians in High School Music Production Class gain confidence and jam!  Musicianship is a skill that you usually see develop in college or in experienced senior musicians. It is usually described as making the musicians around you play better and sharing your understanding through your performance.
