I
n February we welcomed almost 300 guests as we co-hosted the Shape of the Region Conference with the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce. Keynote speakers included Michael Cassidy, President & CEO, Commonwealth Institute, and Richard Reeves, Senior Fellow of Economic Studies and Co-Director of the Center on Children and Families at the Brookings Institution; as well as two key panels that delved into topics highlighted by the Opportunity Index. The conference presenters discussed our region's prosperity and vitality within a greater context of how to share the benefits of our rising region with all who live and work here.

Our 2016 -2017 Annual Report, "A Year of Growing the Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia," highlights the growth of the Permanent Fund and its impact. In the past year the Foundation's asset base grew by $10 million from $37 to $47 million, received $13 million in annual contributions, and distributed $4.7 million through grants and scholarships.

Since May 2017 when the topic of Community Wealth Building, a systems approach to economic development, was introduced at our Innovation Breakfast event, we have been working with a team of community leaders to determine the best way to implement Community Wealth Building in our region.
In recent months, the team has completed Phase I of the project by selecting South Fairfax County as a focus geography, and low income youth and young adults, ages 16-24 as a focus population. The team also identified priority challenges and gaps in the system connecting young people entering careers with the supports to help them qualify for jobs and with opportunities that offer wealth-building features.
The next phase of work prioritizes direct engagement with young job seekers, service providers and employers. Direct feedback from clients and stakeholders will allow us to test our understanding of the system we are working to improve, and likely result in refinements to our initial ideas.

We have joined other non profit leaders to launch a new initiative - GIVE Northern Virginia - with a focus of raising awareness and understanding about the impact of the new tax law on individual charitable giving in Northern Virginia. Our goal is to support local understanding of the tax law on our nonprofit sector. We invite all Northern Virginia nonprofits to
click here and complete a brief survey. When you complete the survey and click submit, we will add your name to the group of participating nonprofits. On April 1, July 1, October 1, and January 1, we will send you the password that provides you with access to the anonymized data collection survey and you have 30 days to complete it. On a quarterly basis, we will share the data with you.

The Latino Engagement and Achievement Fund (LEAF) recently announced its first grant of $25,000 to Edu-Futuro, a nonprofit with offices in Arlington and Springfield. The grant will support Edu-Futuro's Emerging Leaders Program which targets the next generation of leaders and professionals in the Latino community. Edu-Futuro empowers under-resourced Latino and immigrant youth and their parents through education, leadership development, and family engagement. LEAF was launched in April of 2017 to promote and invest in the civic engagement, education, economic success, naturalization, health, leadership development, volunteerism, and advocacy of the Latino community in the Metro DC region.

Applications for 2018 Community Investment Funds Grant are being evaluated and applicants will be notified of funding status in May. This is the signature grant cycle managed by the Community Foundation to help respond to critical need in our region.

cholarship applications for the 2018-2019 school year are open and eligible applications from graduating high school seniors in Northern Virginia may be submitted. The Community Foundation holds multiple scholarship funds and awards over $200,000 each year to help nearly 80 Northern Virginia students attend the college of their choice. Each scholarship has different selection criteria, allowing opportunities for a diverse range of students.

You are a Diversity Task Force member. What is this role and how have you been involved?
The Diversity Task Force originated under the leadership of the last Board chair, Paul Leslie. It began as a result of a conversation where we discussed the need for the Community Foundation to better reflect the changing make up of Northern Virginia -and to focus on doing so at the board level, the staff level, the donor level, and so on. Paul took the important step to create a Diversity Committee as a subcommittee of the board. The results have been incredible with new board members, new funds, honorees, all because we chose to take a hard look at ourselves and respond to local need. I could not be prouder to have been a part of this effort and realize that sometimes having the 'tough conversation' really does result in change!

Donating part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan, is an excellent way to make a gift to our community.

- Receive potential estate tax savings from an estate tax deduction
To leave your retirement assets to the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, you will need to complete a beneficiary designation form provided by your retirement plan custodian. If you designate the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia as beneficiary, we will benefit from the full value of your gift because your IRA assets will not be taxed at your death. Your estate will benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift.
