From Fr. Jim Harrison

In the Advent/Christmas story as told in Godly Play, we hear these words about the birthplace of Christ:

The little town we seek sits in the hill country some ten miles south of Jerusalem. For thousands of years the houses have gathered there on the hilltop like a family breaking bread. "Bethlehem" means "House of Bread."

Every Sunday, of course, we take into our bodies "the body of Christ; the bread of heaven," and in that we are united with God. We heard, from the gospel according to John on the third Sunday in Lent, Jesus say, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." He was speaking of the temple of his body. John tells us that after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. John's gospel famously begins in echo of the book of Genesis, "In the beginning was the Word..."

This talk of temple and house is more than coincidental. David wanted to build a temple for God, and God had Nathan tell David of God's promise to build a temple for him. The connections are meaningful at the deepest level of our faith. In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul asks rhetorically, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" As members of the body of Christ, we 'house' the Holy Spirit within our selves.

The first letter of the Torah is a "bet," as in "b'reishit bara Elohim..." (in the beginning made God...) This letter is shaped like a house (and indeed is the word for house), open to the left, which is of course the direction the text is flowing. Jewish tradition says this teaches us to be as welcoming and hospitable as that bet, open to whoever and whatever comes to us, and that therefore radical hospitality is the first and greatest commandment, written in the first three strokes of Torah.

The following poem from the Sufi mystic, Rumi, illuminates the fact that hospitality is not just a Hebrew or Christian commandment, but it is one recognized by all of the children of God.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

~Rumi

As we continue our Lenten journey toward the cross and, ultimately, the resurrection of Christ, I am mindful of the ways in which I am called to be his disciple - one whose  'house' is open to all as was commanded "in the beginning..."

Peace and Blessings, Fr. Jim+

Date: Thursday, March 15
Time: 6:00pm
Place: All Saints sanctuary

Frank Rippl, retired organist at All Saints, will make a brief return to the console of the All Saints Möller pipe organ to accompany the 1927 Silent Film classic "King of Kings" directed by Cecil B. DeMille.  It depicts the last weeks of Christ's time on earth, leading up to his death on the cross and resurrection.

This is part of The History Museum's silent film series.  Tickets are $7.00 and are available at the door.  The movie will be shown with an intermission.  It features some of the earliest uses of technicolor in a few scenes.
Lenten Program: Where Spirituality & Art Intersect
Wednesdays in Lent, 6:00-7:30pm

After a simple soup, salad, and bread supper (sign up on the bulletin board to provide food), two parishioners will share their art and reflect on how their spirituality informs their creative process. Everyone will then have the opportunity to create their own art.  Next week's subject will be textiles/needlework (3/21), and the final meeting (3/28) will be a retrospective.

Circles of Light
The next session of Circles of Light - Here I Am will be held on Saturday, March 17 from 10am-1pm at St. Mark Episcopal Church, Waupaca. This is the first step in diocesan discernment for ministry, baptismal or ordained. This process of inquiry and discernment about God's desire for our lives and our vocation is a six-month journey of meeting in small groups with a facilitator to explore where God is calling one to ministry. The commitment participants should expect to make is 10 sessions, each lasting between 2 and 3 hours, spaced 1 to 3 weeks apart.

If interested, please speak with Fr. Jim and contact the Chair of the Commission on Ministry, Mother Monica Burkert-Brist, and indicate your desire to attend, home congregation (name and city, please) and contact information.

Learn more about the Commission on Ministry  here.
