New Health and Recreation Center Coming to North Hollywood

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of breaking ground on New Directions for Youth's (NDY) Health and Recreation Center in North Hollywood. This was a special event for me because I have long supported NDY's work with at-risk youth. For more than 43 years, NDY has transformed tens of thousands of young lives by creating a positive atmosphere for children in the San Fernando Valley. NDY serves 3,000 youth each year and has provided free services for a whopping 90,000 people in our communities.

In 2009, NDY purchased their own building on Lankershim Boulevard to expand operations due to need. As their efforts progressed, they realized that even the new facilities weren't enough to accommodate all the great things NDY sought to accomplish. They wanted to be able to house even more programs targeted at changing the social environment for underserved youth.
In This Issue
When NDY's executive director and guiding light, Monica Austin-Jackson, shared with me all the things they could do if they had a new facility, I immediately scoured the funding sources that are reserved for and available to projects like this. I am proud to say that, with the support of my City Council colleagues, I was able to secure $600,000 toward building NDY's Health and Recreation Center. This funding, along with generous donations from private individuals and foundations, is now allowing NDY to bring their bold vision to life.

The new 5,000-square-foot NDY Health and Recreation Center will house numerous programs, such as a music development and recording, dance, yoga, a fitness gym and outdoor sports, all targeting kids in need. This will augment NDY's current programs including, after school tutoring, counseling, computer skills, coding, robotics, art therapy, life skills, recreational activities, summer camp and so much more.

I will keep you updated on the progress of NDY's Health and Recreation center in the months ahead. If you would like to support this critical community organization, please visit their website: http://ndfy.org.

Very truly yours,

Krekorian Seeks to Increase Internet Access, Affordability

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Krekorian introduced a motion calling for Los Angeles to study creating a new publicly owned department to provide affordable broadband internet services to residents.

A USC Annenberg School study found that most LA communities have only one choice in broadband providers, leading to lost economic opportunities in low-income areas of the city due to lack of competition and lack of transparency in pricing.

According to Krekorian's motion, the new department's mission would be to improve LA's network capabilities, provide a community and economic development toll by providing at-cost internet services to businesses and residents and bridge the digital divide among neighborhoods lacking high-speed, low-latency services.

"Los Angeles owns an extensive network of fiber optic cable that runs through every part of the city," said Councilmember Krekorian. "I want to see if we can put it to use and ensure that everyone has access to fast, affordable internet services."

The motion will be discussed by the City Council's Information, Technology and General Services Committee in the coming weeks.

Valley Village and Van Nuys Get New Sidewalks

EAST VALLEY - The city's Safe Sidewalks LA program just completed another round of repairs in the East Valley. Among the locations were seven curb cuts to improve sidewalk accessibility, in addition to three pavement repairs to broken segments on the public right-of-way.

Sidewalk  repairs are happening in residential and commercial neighborhoods across Council District 2. Homeowners and commercial property owners are encouraged to take advantage of the Rebate Program, a limited-time, cost-sharing program that  provides a maximum of $10,000 for residential and commercial property owners for initiating needed sidewalk repairs.

Angelenos can also request sidewalk repairs through the Access Request Program.  This program takes complaints and makes repairs requested by people with a mobility disability who encounter physical barriers, like broken sidewalks, missing/broken curb ramps or other problems in the public right of way.

To participate in the Rebate Program, the Access Request Program or to report a broken sidewalk, visit www.sidewalks.lacity.org.

Safe Storage Law Helps Prevent School Tragedies

Parents were arrested for failing to properly store these firearms after their children made threats against local Valley schools. | Photo: City Attorney's Office

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer filed criminal charges of unlawful firearms storage against two San Fernando Valley parents following investigations by Los Angeles Unified School District police into gun violence threats allegedly made by their teens at two local high schools. The city's safe storage law, authored by Councilmember Krekorian and approved by the City Council, requires gun owners to store firearms in a locked container or disable them with a trigger locking mechanism when kept at home.

"School safety begins at home, and so does the potential for school tragedies," said Councilmember Krekorian. "Parents who own guns must lock them up to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. It is intolerable for us as a government or society to allow young people to be endangered in the very places they should feel secure, which is why the City of Los Angeles is doing everything in its power to curb gun violence. I applaud the City Attorney's decision to prosecute this case and the efforts of all law enforcement agencies who are working to keep children safe from the threat of gun violence."
COMMUNITY CORNER
Valley Students Organize to Stop Gun Violence

STUDIO CITY- Prior to the wave of national school walkouts this week, local middle school students held a rally in Studio City against gun violence and to urge the federal government to take meaningful action on this issue. The rally was sparked by the mass movement that came about after the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 students and adults died.

"I'm truly proud of this courageous group of young students who used their voices to bring attention to the issue of gun safety and speak out against gun violence in our communities," said Councilmember Krekorian. "It is so powerful to see young people across the nation organizing and demanding that the weak-kneed leadership in Congress and the White House do something to end the carnage. These students are the next generation of leaders, and their ideas and opinions deserve to be heard."

On March 24, students will lead marches in Los Angeles and cities across the country to demand action on gun violence. Here's how you can join them:
