Greetings,
It's mid-winter but the frigid and thaw weather  that Regina has experienced lately makes me wonder what season we're in. Your board of directors recently had their mid-year meeting on January 22. Regina area members met at SLA's office and others called in. It reduced expenses and time and, by all accounts, the 3 hour meeting was very productive.
There are a few association related deadlines that I'd like to mention. First is that the deadline to apply for a continuing education grants is February 15 and details are in this issue of SLAte. Please consider taking advantage of these great educational opportunities. Second, we are now accepting nominations for board positions. I can't emphasize enough the professional value of serving on the board and making new friends and contacts. Yes, there is a time commitment and I see SLA work as complementing and perhaps even enhancing one's salaried office work.

Applications are invited for the
2018 Mary Donaldson Award.
 The Mary Donaldson Memorial Trust was established in 1966 to honour the memory of Mary Donaldson, who was Saskatchewan's first Provincial Librarian from 1951 until her death in 1966. The Mary Donaldson Award of Merit was established in 1977 to provide a bursary to a full-time or part-time Saskatchewan student enrolled in a library and information technician program. The award will be presented during the annual Saskatchewan Library Association Conference in May. Name:Julie McKenna
Title: Deputy Library Director, Regina Public Library
Born and lived: Born in Greenock, Scotland
Early Life: Grew up in Beaches area of Toronto.
Professional career and activities: Completed a Bachelor of Music Performance and Artist Diploma in Orchestral Performance and was a working classical musician for eight years while working in libraries throughout that time to help pay the bills. While working at the Banff Centre Library and Archives, I made the decision to pursue an MLIS at Western University. I joined the staff of Regina Public Library in 1992 where I stayed until 2001 in a variety of roles and as an active elected member of the CUPE local. I left RPL in 2001 to become Associate University Librarian at the University of Regina. In 2007, I returned to RPL as the Deputy Library Director. Actively involved in the international evidence-based library and information practice movement and have served as a writer of evidence summaries and articles for the EBLIP Journal and served as a peer reviewer and member of the conference planning committee. Currently a member of the IFLA Library Buildings and Equipment standing committee, and will soon be appointed as the Prairie Provinces designate on the CFLA Board.
Family: Partner Miles Newman is Principal Trumpet of the Regina Symphony and teaches at the University of Regina. Daughter Katie is a very accomplished cellist who is now at Law School at the University of Saskatchewan.

Education Institute (EI) Winter Calendar Released
The Education Institute (EI) is a continuing education program for library information workers developed by The Partnership of Provincial and Territorial Library Associations of Canada. The Education Institute releases a calendar in early January that promotes webinars that are offered from January - April. EI offers single-site registrations for one-hour webinars for the usual fee of $45 for members and $55 for non-members. Please check your calendar for upcoming opportunities.

The Partnership Journal, The Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research is issuing a call for submissions for Vol. 13.1. The deadline for deadline for peer-reviewed sections is March 31, 2018 and for non-peer-reviewed sections.

The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is inviting you to participate in the Saskatchewan Libraries Conference and CFLA-FCAB National Forum at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Convention Centre, Regina SK on Wednesday, May 2nd to Friday, May 4th, 2018.
The conference theme, Libraries! Convergence Under Living Skies, encourages libraries of all types from across Canada to work together to identify commonalities, share experiences, build on success and plan together for our shared future.

Attention Volunteers!
SLA 2018 is looking for volunteers to support an assortment of activities at this year's conference. We need charismatic speakers to introduce our wonderful presenters, tech-savvy minds to provide AV and technology support, and friendly faces to staff the registration table. We're also looking for gregarious guests to coordinate some of our social events, and creatively-inclined individuals to photograph the conference. Great volunteers help to make a conference fantastic, and it takes a range of talents to get the job done. As well, participating as a volunteer will help you to get the most out of your conference experience by placing you in the thick of events and activities. Following on last year's highly successful and fun
Creative
Collaborations in Saskatchewan session, the Creative Collaborations Network is thrilled to be hosting a "second edition". The intent remains the same, i.e. to provide a sample of the broad range of collaborations, big or small, currently underway in Saskatchewan, highlighting the possibilities inherent in collaborative relationships. The session will use a lightning round approach; the information provided is a "teaser", encouraging further engagement with presenters following the session. Each presenter will have 5 minutes to present 20 slides - with an additional twist that the slides auto advancing every 15 seconds.
There's nothing too serious here. We want your story and your perspective. Whatever however you want to share about your collaboration is up to you! To get a sense of what we're talking about, here's a video that describes how to conduct an Ignite talk, which is the format that the Creative Collaborations session is based upon.

by Amy Jo Ehman, published by MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc. This book traces the history of our province through food that has been gathered, grown, prepared and eaten. From First Nations and Métis people, to immigrants from Europe, Asia and the United States, the people who lived here used all available ingredients to feed their families. The book is about people, history, and culture as reflected in their (our) food.
All Saskatchewan residents are encouraged to read and discuss the book, and to plan or attend a One Book One Province event. Information on events, including author readings around the province, as well as ideas for hosting your own event, are available on the project web site:

Professional Career and Activities: I started volunteering at my junior high school library and have been volunteering or working in libraries ever since -- primarily academic libraries, but also public libraries, school libraries, college libraries, and music libraries. I've worked in Circulation , Acquisitions, Reference, Archives, ILL, Cataloguing and Database Management.
In my spare time: As you can imagine, I don't have a lot of spare time, but I'm hoping once the learning curve stabilizes I'll be involved in community banding and the community theatre here in The Battlefords.
Favorite books: I'm a big Stephen King fan, but the most recent "horrific" read was Eunoia, by Christian Bök. (My skills as a wordsmith horrifically pale in comparison!)
I'm currently reading: Legislation (not recommended for book club use...)
Jonathon Powell, Library Consultant at PNLS has accepted a new position in Ontario. The position is Library Programmer for Leeds and the Thousand Islands Public Library. He will be designing, promoting and coordinating programming and events for all of the public library system's branches. Leeds and the Thousand Islands is township located between Kingston and Ottawa, Ontario.
Colin Evans, Community Services Librarian at Lakeland Regional Library has accepted a new position as Branch Manager at the Weyburn Public Library in the Southeast Regional Library System.

February 2018 is Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month
Saskatchewan Minister of Education, Bronwyn Eyre, has declared  February Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month.
Throughout February First Nations & Métis storytelling events are held in schools, libraries, and community organizations throughout Saskatchewan. Aboriginal Storytelling Month observes the First Nations' tradition of winter storytelling. The intent is to increase province-wide cultural activity; have elders and Aboriginal storytellers demonstrate the cultural and historical value of storytelling; and foster storytelling partnerships through joint planning with outside agencies and resources. The project involves schools, libraries, local agencies, universities, colleges and Aboriginal organizations.
This event is led by Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples Inc. and supported by a variety of Sponsors and Funders every year. For information on events near you, contact your local library or visit the

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
