March 15 Update & Message From WH&LA Past Chairs
March 15, 2018

Dear WH&LA Lodging Member:

Today we have a special message from a great alliance of our WH&LA Past Chairs to start with, and a brief update on some issues right below it.
Dear WH&LA Members:

We have had the privilege of serving as a Past Chair of the WH&LA, and with that role has come a better understanding of the importance of having our lodging industry association actively engaged at the state level, where both advantageous and horrible proposals come forward each session that may have a considerable impact on how we can do business and at what costs.

With this understanding comes the reality that being on the forefront in supporting the campaigns of candidates that will support our industry and understand our issues when drafting bills or making votes, is critical. While many members may be personally politically active during campaigns, the majority may not be, making it even more important for the WH&LA to be visible in supporting key campaigns to help ensure that candidates who understand the importance of tourism are elected.

We have joined together not only to ask you to consider donating to the WH&LAPAC, which raises funds that are used to make donations to key campaigns, bringing us face-to-face with key candidates to talk with them about tourism, but also to demonstrate our personal conviction that this is so important. Each of us listed below have committed to donating to WHLAPAC, and we ask you to also donate $100, $50, or even $25 this week. Please note, by state law these donations must be your own funds, as company donations are not allowed. Click here  https://www.tfaforms.com/322615 to donate today. Thank you for joining us!

Last Days of State Senate Session Next Week
The Wisconsin Senate will be in session next Tuesday, March 20, with their tentative calendar of bills to consider just out. As it is unknown if they will need to continue into either next Wednesday or Thursday, and if further issues will be added, so we are monitoring everything closely.
The following bills we have been telling you about are already slated for final consideration in the Senate:
  • AB 811/SB 679 - Added $6.8 million in funding to attract and retain Wisconsin workers
  • AB 748/SB 634 - Employment Law Standardization Act (prohibiting municipalities from adopting local ordinances more strict than the state relating to such employment issues as Employee Scheduling, Hours, Overtime, and more.
  • AB 904/SB 748 - Changes in Carbon Monoxide Detector requirements in lodging properties, including one amendment that WH&LA pursued
Some other bills yet to pass the state Senate, such as SB 137 on Historic Barn Rentals, SB 451 Prohibiting DATCP from regulating the terms of sale or rental of soda water beverage equipment,  and SB 311 on Later Hours for Wineries and some controversial amendments expanding this bill - all were not on this preliminary schedule, meaning they may have hit some snags, or just that the Senate will add them to another day. We will advise when more is known.

Reminder on Anti-Human Trafficking Resources
Following a session on Human Trafficking at the Governors Conference on Tourism earlier this week, the following clip ran this morning in Madison, mentioning WH&LA's support in getting new training resources out to owners, managers, and employees of lodging properties around the state:https://www.channel3000.com/news/webinars-train-hotel-staff-on-human-trafficking-signs/716677519.

In the event that you have not yet had a chance to utilize these great training resources, here are the links once again to the webinar "Human Trafficking and the Lodging Industry":

As always, your interest and support is appreciated.
