Since the St. Patrick's Day Parade falls on St. Patrick's Day this year, that means double the St. Patrick's spirit! The theme of the parade is "Dublin Down," and the fun steps off at noon this Saturday from Clinton Square. The parade route will proceed down South Salina Street to Harrison Street. For this doubly special day, the parade will honor two Grand Marshals - developer Ed Riley and Hunger Project co-founder Billy Gooley - to help celebrate Syracuse's vibrant community.

Chef Challenge Syracuse is a local version of the Food Network show "Chopped," highlighting farm-fresh food and local chefs from Syracuse restaurants. The chefs at The Mission Restaurant will receive a mystery box full of high-quality, local ingredients, which they must use to prepare a four-course meal for each member of the audience. Guests watch the chef prepare each course and taste each creation.

The first course is served at 5:45 pm, but guests are welcome to arrive as early as 4:30 pm to watch the chefs prepare the food.

World War I Reading & Discussion Program

Attend the Onondaga Historical Association's (OHA) new reading and discussion series, "Our World Remade: World War I," sponsored by Humanities New York. Participants will discuss a variety of thematically linked texts from readings including primary sources and larger monographs that deal with various aspects of the war, from the battlefield to the home-front and how the Great War fundamentally altered the course of warfare, geo-politics and the lives of ordinary people across the world.  The discussions will take place inside the OHA's World War I exhibit, which includes a wide variety of objects, including uniforms, helmets and other artifacts, and an incredible array of photographs and wartime images from Syracuse.

Attendees will hear from three speakers who will share insights about how activities happening in Downtown Syracuse influence the region!

  • Newly elected  Mayor Ben Walsh  will share his perspective on how what happens in Downtown Syracuse impacts the City of Syracuse and its residents.
  • Samara Hannah, executive director of the Redhouse Arts Center, will share details on the dramatic transformation of the former Sibley's building into a  new state-of-the-art theater - and how a move into Downtown Syracuse - creates new opportunities.
  • Jim Fox, CEO and chairman of OBG, will share his reflections on how OBG has evolved as it nears its 10-year anniversary in Downtown Syracuse - a move that paved the path for future growth  and raised the profile of a downtown location!
Plus, Downtown Committee of Syracuse executive director Merike Treier will share results from the Downtown Committee's most recent constituent survey. Stay tuned for an  exciting announcement that will enhance the downtown employee experience! 

As part of this special program, all presenters will also be available after breakfast, giving guests an opportunity to mingle and network in a personal setting.

An Evening of Music - From the Heart

Next Friday, Peter Mack brings "An Evening of Music - From the Heart" to the cozy surroundings of Jazz Central for an evening of Latin-tinged jazz. Proceeds will benefit CNY Jazz and the Spanish Action League.   

"From the Heart" is an international quartet led by Mack, a well-known bassist, business executive and a community philanthropist from Auburn in Cayuga County. The quartet also features world-renowned percussionist Harvey Sorgen, who has performed with rock and pop artists including Hot Tuna, Paul Simon, Bruce Hornsby, Gregg Allman and Carlos Santana, as well as jazz collaborations with Jimmy and Percy Heath, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell and many others. Pianist Angelica Sanchez has worked with Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Motian, Ralph Alessi, and Susie Ibarra, and leads her own quintet as well. Guitarist Omar Tamez, an international musical force, composer and producer, rounds out the quartet. Tamez studied with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and logged thousands of hours collaborating with luminaries including Rashid Ali, Sonny Fortune and Sam Rivers.

Admission at the door is $15. Students who show valid identification can get in for $10. Additional tax-deductible donations are encouraged.

"Look Great in 28" Program
Metro Fitness offers new abbreviated weight loss program

"Look Great in 28" is an abbreviated four-week version of Metro's very successful six-week Metro42 program. The program includes pre and post body stats and health history consultations, clean eating nutrition coaching from Metro's certified health coaches, meetings and consultations with a mental health specialist. Participants will also be given a MyZone heart rate monitor and access to the gym, classes and small group personal training for four weeks.

Calling all small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to take their business to the next level! There's just one week left to apply for the U.S. Small Business Administration's Emerging Leaders Syracuse 2018 Class!

Emerging Leaders is an intensive executive-level training program designed to accelerate growth of small businesses with high potential. The program offers business owners opportunities to learn and implement innovative strategies to grow, acquire financing, access new markets and leverage networking. Participants develop a three-year Strategic Growth Action Plan for their company's unique goals.

Recent downtown graduates of the program include Metro Fitness, Recess Coffee, The Events Company, and Liehs & Steigerwald.

How To Apply:  Interested participants should submit a letter of interest to Grace Connors ( [email protected] ) or Steve Barr ( [email protected] ) by next Friday, March 23

What the Program Entails: Participants can plan on 100 hours of combined classroom, homework and peer-to-peer networking. For planning purposes, classes start in April at the Tech Garden, located at 235 Harrison Street ( map ). They'll be held every other week through early November. The program is free to attend. 

Requirements:  The program is open to small business owners who have been in business for at least three years. Businesses must be located within Central New York, and generate an annual revenue between $400,000 and $10,000,000. *Please note, this program is not for start-up businesses. Space is limited; Emerging Leaders strongly encourages one applicant per business.

The Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) Medal is the highest honor that the OHA can bestow for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting our heritage. This May, the 2018 OHA Medal will be awarded to three individuals: 
1.) Michael Moss for his work to preserve and advance the history of Onondaga County's Jewish community.
2.) Alissa Viti, manager of Charitable and Community Relations at M&T Bank, for her dedication to educating the public about our community's history through the funding of OHA programs and exhibitions.
3.) Allen Naples for his leadership and his commitment to financing the restoration and adaptive reuse of our historic architecture, an important component of our community's very identity.
