From the Director
Watching from my living room window as the snow falls, I hope that every family is snug and able to enjoy the beauty of the season. At the same time, Ashwood's faculty recognizes that it can be frustrating for some families to experience so many weather-related school closings. Teachers also struggle with lost instructional time. Piling on missed work afterward isn't really effective; children need rhythm and thoughtfully crafted lessons to absorb their studies meaningfully.

Ashwood, like Waldorf schools throughout New England, cannot add school days in June. After eighth-grade graduation, teachers spend days writing detailed narrative reports for each student, and also participate in faculty meetings, reviewing the school year and making decisions for next year. Many teachers and administrators then head off to Waldorf training workshops and the national AWSNA conference, which take place in June.

As we begin to form next year's calendar, we will consider possible ways to build in a few snow days in the hope of offsetting a similar situation in the future. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and understanding.

With warm regards,
- Jody Spanglet
