This does not interfere with your gas points or other City Market programs.
**Please note, you need to re-register your City Market card on their website every year.   T o register, pease go to  https://www.citymarket.com/topic/city-market-community-rewards     and click on  Enroll Now

Please join us for our next PIC meeting,  Wednesday, February 7, 12-1pm in the SSHS media center. We are a drop-in group, no membership or commitment required! Just come and learn!!

    Principal's Report
Message from Principal Taulman:

As we are in the process of registering for classes for next year, please be thoughtful in your registration decisions.  I urge you to have your student read the registration guide carefully so that they can make good choices with regard to course they are required to complete for graduation.  If there is not sufficient student interest in a particular course, it will not be offered during the upcoming school year.  The master schedule is created based on student request for courses.  If your student has any questions regarding their registration process, have them see their counselor.

   AP and State Testing
State Testing
9th and 10th Grade PSAT and 11th SAT - All students will need to create a Collegeboard.org account prior to testing. If students do not have a Collegeboard account they should create one at www.collegeboard.org
. SSHS asks students to do so in this format: your username should be your 2 initials and your student ID number (ex. dm540367) and your password should be your 2 initials and your 6 digit birthdate (ex. dm040299). This will allow st udents to check their scores early and have access to free test prep through Khan Academy.
► All 11th grade students attending public schools in Colorado will take the SAT. The SAT without essay is the default registration for all students.
► Colorado statute requires that students have the option to take the SAT with essay.
► Adding the essay to SAT registration is a student level choice. Schools or districts should not make policy decisions regarding which students will or will not take the SAT essay nor should schools or districts encourage or discourage individual students from taking the SAT essay.
► Students who wish to take the essay must register for it between January 16, 2018 - February 14, 2018
► Students may add the essay to their registration through their online College Board account or by calling the College Board.
The essay provides students a chance to show colleges they are ready for college level writing assignments.

   Highlights from our November
   Guest Speaker,

Laura Stout gave the PIC an informal update about Nutrition and the Teenage brain. Some of the key highlights included:

  • We need to steer kids away from the Standard American Diet (SAD) which is rich in red meat, dairy products, processed and artificially sweetened foods, and salt, with minimal intake of fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, and whole grains.
  • Teens need to look at foods to help replace muscle glycogen right after a workout, with a good blend of carbs and healthy fats and kids should be involved in the prepping.
  • Depression is linked to diet.  Low Vitamin D and B levels are common, especially in the winter and this can lead to depression (especially Low Vitamin D).
  • Even if you take a multivitamin in the morning, if you don't eat well throughout the day, by mid afternoon you have already depleted your B vitamins.
  • Some foods to consider:
    • Eat Whole Grains for B Vitamins
    • Flax Seeds for Protein
    • Chia Seeds for Omega 3
    • Try adding avocado, spinach and onion to eggs in the morning.
    • Make pastas as green as possible by adding veggies
An interesting article about teens and nutrition is an insightful read.

Update on the 2017 School Bond
The district is moving forward with the Phase I projects approved by voters in November, 2017.  The plan is for the work to be completed this summer while students are not in school.  The district is also moving ahead with their Phase II, which is  research for a long term, comprehensive plan that addresses our school capacity issues. They formed four Advisory Committees (facilities, programs, extra-curricular and communications) to do the research with a target date of November, 2019 for a possible ballot measure.  Read below for details of Phase I and Phase II. A  recent article  in Steamboat Today offers some highlights as well.  You can keep up to date on the school district's progress on their 2017 Bond webpage.
