Vestry Calls New Priest-in-Charge
Dear St. Peter's Faithful,
On behalf of the Vestry, I am very excited and pleased to announce the calling of The Rev. Greg Warren to be Priest-in-Charge of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
On Saturday, March 17, 2018, Greg will be ordained to the transitional diaconate at Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock as he is wrapping up his final year attending the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. He will graduate in May with his Masters of Divinity degree. His most recent field assignment has been a bilingual (English/Spanish) post at St. James' in Austin. Greg will attend the 2018 General Convention this summer to help with the Episcopal Peace Fellowship's "Palestine Israel Initiative."
Prior to Greg being called to the ministry, he lived in Bentonville, Arkansas, where he attended All Saints' Episcopal. Greg brings an extensive background in corporate advertising and management from his previous employment with Walmart, MediaVest Worldwide, and the Leo Burnett and Landor Associates advertising firms. He holds both a BA in Psychology and French and an MBA with emphasis in Marketing from Indiana University. When not studying, Greg reads, journals, exercises, gardens, and enjoys daily walks with his partner, Mark Lamb, and their two pets.
The Vestry, following the recommendation of the Search Committee, voted unanimously to invite Greg to be St. Peter's Priest-in-Charge at a special meeting held Sunday, March 11. Amy Hawkins, chair of the search committee, had this to say, "The committee unanimously and wholeheartedly believes Greg is the ideal person to lead St. Peter's at this time in our church's collective life." God willing, Greg will join us to lead his first worship services at St. Peter's in mid-June, with a specific date to be announced very soon.
The Vestry is grateful to all who prayed and helped during this time of transition. We also offer considerable thanks to our Rector Search Committee who devoted much time, energy, and prayer to this process. Please join us in thanking Amy Hawkins, chair, and members Scotty Bell, Jane Harris, Karen McNutt, Amanda Moore, Dinah Reed, Jay Ruud, Brad Teague, and Taylor Tennison.
I know we all look forward to welcoming Greg and Mark to St. Peter's in June, as we begin a new journey together for the church and parish we love and cherish.

Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the "Kingdom of God." The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his death, his followers would call him God.
For the next three Sundays we will continue to prepare for Holy Week, Palm Sunday and Easter by delving into Reza Aslan's 2013 book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. Having read Zealot in 2013 when it was released, Kevin Mequet will facilitate our discussion of who this historical Jesus was and how did Christianity form from Reza's perspective. Obviously, this discussion is not definitive, but rather speculative and illuminative yet grounded in historical evidence that allows us to think deeply about our faith. Please join the conversation in preparation during the season of Lent for the coming of Holy Week.

Pantry Musings
In the past few weeks we have focused on a way of knowing God as found in the Gospel of John. This week we consider the ways that Jesus modeled his friendship with those closest to him. He went to great lengths to reaffirm his relationship to his disciples, including appearing to them in a locked room after his resurrection, and having Thomas feel the marks on his body, especially his side where the sword had pierced it. Only then did Thomas admit that Jesus lived, responding with "My Lord and my God!" (John 20.28). Jesus also prepared breakfast for the disciples who were fishing (John 21.15) and assumed the identity of a gardener outside the tomb in order to meet Mary Magdalene, who was charged with getting word to the disciples that Jesus lived - even after his crucifixion and burial.
All these events happened after Jesus' death and resurrection, but there were other relationship affirming events even before his death - one of which was his anointing with a costly oil by another Mary. She was roundly criticized by some of the disciples and other guests at dinner because she spent her money on oil for Jesus and not for feeding the poor and supporting the Jesus Movement. Jesus rebuked them knowing his death was to come soon and her anointment was in anticipation of that event. It was a sacred event in anticipation of the sorrow to come. An event which occurs during a supper party - which appears to be one of Jesus' favorite ways of spending time with his friends. He knew that food was a draw that would bring humans together, where they could get to know one another and continue their relationships with one another. I sometimes think that we do not pay attention to similarity between these situations and our lives because they are couched in unusual stories about Jesus appearances after his death. But Jesus loved a party and he loved to eat with friends, even before he died. We don't pay attention to the obvious or the familiar but maybe we should. I suppose that the unusual
is important, but I think the familiar is equally, if not
more important, because it gives us a way of continuing Jesus' love for us in our ordinary lives. -Ann Drake

Jeremiah 31:31-34
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt-a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Hebrews 5:5-10
Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
"You are my Son,
today I have begotten you";
as he says also in another place,
"You are a priest forever,
according to the order of Melchizedek."
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
John 12:20-33
Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.
"Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say-'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.
