NOTES FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS
We're excited to present the return of the SCC newsletter, our SCCoop, AND our new
website! Thanks to
Blooming Pixel Creatives for a fantastic and quick job! As we've been thinking about rolling out the newsletter and website, along with some bylaws changes we're considering to consolidate communications roles, it seems
Communications is our theme for 2018! This ties perfectly with our spring speaker, Wendy Mogel, author of the forthcoming
Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Listen.
In it she offers guidance for communicating with children across the expanse of childhood and adolescence and explains the most effective ways to talk about your child to teachers, coaches, nannies, and everyone else!
Thank you to the
New Dominion Women's Club and the
McLean Rotary Club for generous donations which support transportion, lunch, and materials for 6th Grade Ethics day and our other activities. And thanks for all the Ethics Day volunteers you've sent our way! We also thank
The Artisans in McLean for their donation of a month of gift wrapping contributions. And thanks to the
TJHSST PTSA and the many individual donors we've had this winter. Community and communications go together, and we cannot put on our many programs without our community.
Thanks for your ongoing support over the years. As always,
let us know how we're doing!
Brad Kuebler and Amber Syed, Co-Presidents

COMING SOON! WENDY MOGEL, SCC SPRING SPEAKER
The Safe Community Coalition is proud to bring Dr. Wendy Mogel, clinical psychologist, parenting expert and New York Times best-selling author, to McLean on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at 7 pm at Temple Rodef Shalom. Mark your calendars and look for ticket details coming soon.
Dr. Mogel is the author of two parenting classics, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B-Minus, that have guided thousands of parents through the joys and trials of child rearing. In her newest book
Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Listen
, to be released in April 2018, Dr. Mogel shows parents how to cultivate the art of conversation with their kids--from infancy to adulthood--and demonstrates how a shift in tone, tempo, and body language can open up avenues of communication, even in the age of digital distraction. 6th Grade Ethics Day
Throughout October and November, 6th graders from Chesterbrook, Churchill Road, Colvin Run, Franklin Sherman, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Spring Hill, and Timberlane Elementary schools joined together at Temple Rodef Shalom to learn and practice integrity and ethical thinking.
The program's goal is to help students navigate difficult ethical situations that may arise as they progress through middle school, high school and beyond. During the program, students are provided with an ethical decision-making model (the Could, Should, Would model
) to assist them in dealing with ethical dilemmas they may face in their lives.
The s
tudents also
participate in a Cross the Line exercise where they considered a variety of statements that may or may not have been true for them.
In addition, they talk abou
t what it means to be a
person of integrity
.
We had four days this year for Sixth Grade Ethics. We taught 863 students an ethical decision making model and what it means to be a person of integrity. We trained 102 table leader volunteers. We served countless slices of pizza, handed out bookmarks, read evaluation and reflection forms, met with middle school and elementary school counselors, sent hundr
eds of email reminders and made this program happen!
Thank you to all of you who showed up, floated, table led, served pizza and supported this year's program. It takes a village, and we
couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.
Special thanks
to
Tracy
McGowan, Melissa Sporn, Maria Barnett, Ann Landrum, and Mimi Weisberg. While we always have revising to do, overall this program keeps getting better and better. We are proud of the impact we are having for our community!

SCC Program Spotlight: School Liaisons
The SCC has a long history of working with our schools to achieve common goals. In order to ensure coordinated communication, parent associations of each school in this sector are asked to provide a volunteer representative to the Coalition. School Liaisons
are the backbone of our organization; they facilitate communication between their individual school and the SCC, provide input to the SCC Board on program topics and emerging issues, and assist in organizing, advertising, and soliciting volunteers for SCC programs and events. You can check with your PTA, PTO, or PTSA to see who represents your school(s) and offer to help.
Contact Laurie Buchanan for more information and to learn about our next meeting. During this quarterly meeting, we'll be sharing information about our upcoming speaker event on May 2nd, as well as discussing book club options and events at your schools that may be of interest to others. This is great way to network with other parents in our community and build on good ideas in support of our youth!

Website Launch
As mentioned above we've recently redesigned our
website to better serve our community. Part of it lists resources
relating to our mission of empowering youth to thrive mentally and physically. If you have particular resources you think would be useful for us to highlight, please
send them along. You can
also visit our
Facebook page where we provide regular tips, links parenting articles, and news updates about our activities.
