Culver City High School Students Plan
Walk Out on March 14
On March 14, students from Culver City High School, Culver Park High School and Culver City Middle School will participate in a nationwide walkout to voice their opinions about gun violence and honor the victims of the Parkland shooting. At 10 a.m., students will congregate on the CCHS football field to rally and deliver speeches expressing their views on the issue. The demonstration will end promptly at 11 a.m., and students will return to class.

Inspired by the protests organized by the survivors of the Parkland shooting, CCHS seniors Carolyn Dodenhoff and Cecilia Ribordy are leading the local movement and are working closely with CCHS/CPHS/CCMS staff and students, Culver City Council, and Culver City Police Department to make the event possible. The students aim to bring awareness to the issue of gun violence and to support the students in Parkland. “The idea of going to school should not elicit my fight or flight reaction,” Dodenhoff said. “Unfortunately, it does right now. But we’re fighting this time.”

As a California Democracy School, CCHS actively promotes and engages students to be more civically minded through the five steps of a civic inquiry and investigation process: 1) Framing a civic inquiry around an issue that is relevant to students, 2) Conducting in-depth research on the multiple perspectives and solutions surrounding the issue, 3) Engaging in civil dialogue to reveal different points of view and perspectives, 4) Communicating a conclusion that is well-researched and, 5) Taking informed action by reaching out to policymakers for effective, appropriate solutions.

“The future of our democracy depends on a citizenry that is well informed and has the capacity to be thoughtful, engaged critical thinkers and problem solvers,” said Dr. Lisa Cooper, CCHS Principal. “Rather than stifle these students as they try to express their civic activism, we are working closely with them to encourage them to express their opinions on this important issue without adversely impacting the learning environment on campus.”

Project Prom Helps Students Get Ready for Their Big Night
Five years ago at Culver City High School, a special space was created called the "Culver Closet." Students are referred by counselors, teachers, and staff for new and gently used items such as clothing, shoes, toiletries, and school supplies. Four years ago, we started "Project Prom."

Project Prom targets the district's lower income students with a day of free services to get ready for their special night, which is on May 19 this year. Project Prom served 63 students last year, and this will be the group's fifth annual event! Special occasions like High School Prom should be accessible to all students who wish to enjoy them, and not just for those with enough resources. So many students, for a range of reasons, simply cannot afford to attend such special events. Project Prom is seeking professional hair and make-up artists to volunteer their time. The group will have music, decorations, and food for the event as well. If you choose to donate or provide services, your generous donation will enable someone in need to enjoy one of these magical milestones!

Project Prom is accepting, tuxedos, jewelry, and accessories through May 4 and is looking for local restaurants or donors to help with refreshments for the students and volunteers. The group is also seeking sponsors for prom tickets or tuxedo rentals. During the event, there is a raffle as a way to add excitement to the festivities. Project Prom is accepting gift cards from places such as local eateries, coffee shops, movie theaters etc. Donations are tax deductible.

If you are interested in making a donation or providing services, please contact Adrienne Madrid at 310-842-4200 ext. 3313. Arrangements can be made to pick up donated items. Donor names will appear in local newspapers, social media, and in the CCUSD Newsletter.

Please visit www.culvercloset.com for more information about what Project Prom does and pictures of last year’s Project Prom. Should you require more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Adrienne Madrid 310-842-4200 x 3313 or adriennemadrid@ccusd.org . CCUSD students and staff thank you in advance for your consideration!
