In this past week’s chapel, we were back in the Book of Mark…specifically unpacking Mark 9:2-8 and the Transfiguration of Jesus.
As you are in your homes, eating around the table, or in the car together, consider discussing the following questions with your students to help open up the opportunity to have spiritual-minded conversations with your student(s)…
[READ MARK 9:2-8]
In chapel, it was discussed that the context of the Transfiguration was the cross (preceding this particular passage was Jesus saying things like, “the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed” and “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.”
- Why do you think it bothered the disciples so much that Jesus repeatedly talked about the fact that He would be killed?
- If we know that what God desires for us is what is best for us and that “taking up our cross and following Jesus” is about exchanging what we want to do and what we desire for what He wants us to do and what He desires, why is it so hard to make that trade?
In chapel, it was discussed that the point of the Transfiguration was to display the glory of Jesus.
- After walking with Jesus, talking with Jesus, listening to Jesus, laughing with Jesus for about a year and a half, why do you think it was important for the disciples to be reminded that Jesus was not just their friend, He was/is the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son of God, God in flesh?
- Even though Jesus is our comforter, our best friend, and our source of strength, how do we fight against the temptation of becoming so casual about Jesus that we forget that He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords…not just our buddy?
In chapel, we discussed that the response of the Transfiguration was to spread the Gospel and message of Jesus.
- Peter not only wanted to commemorate the event of the Transfiguration, he wanted to stay on the mountaintop. Why do you think it is important to know that Jesus led His disciples down from the mountaintop? Who was waiting down on the other side? What did the people waiting at the bottom of the mountain need?
- Who in your life right now do you think needs Jesus? What are some specific ways that you can pour out on them what has been poured into you and show them Jesus?
