One Great Hour of Sharing
On Palm Sunday, March 25th we will be taking up an offering for One Great Hour of Sharing. The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing-Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People-all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope.

Parkway is one of the host sites for volunteers to assist with cleanup and rebuilding from Hurricane Harvey. At this time fifteen volunteer repair crews have applied to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and have been approved for housing at Parkway during their trips to the area and more are signing up each week.

In Isaiah 58, God issues a call and a challenge to love one another more deeply by sharing what we have with those in need. God has given us many blessings, and may we be a blessing to others through our donations to One Great Hour of Sharing.

Fill a Backpack with Love

A month ago two members of Parkway purchased 48 backpacks for the Bus Station Ministry in San Antonio. Now, the Mission Outreach Committee has a challenge for you: Help us fill some backpacks!

You might be asking: So, why are we filling backpacks? Here's some background. The backpacks will be distributed by the Interfaith Welcome Coalition (IWC) in San Antonio founded by the late Kelly Allen of University Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. The Coalition was started to raise awareness and to offer love and a helping hand to the asylum seekers from the Northern Triangle of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, plus, Nicaragua.

A quote from IWC concerning the backpacks: "Give them a pack on the back. Their courage and faith have brought them through unthinkable danger to the safety of our bus station or airport. For $25 you can supply an asylum seeking mom and kids with a backpack for a one to three day journey to a sponsor as they await asylum hearings."

A list follows for those wishing to fill one. If not a check can be made to Parkway with IWC/backpack in notation line and someone from our Mission Outreach Committee will do the shopping.

Each back pack contains:
2 Tooth brushes
Travel size toothpaste
Travel sized Kleenex pack
small pkg. handwipes
2-3 hair scrunchies or hair bands
2 boxes of animal crackers (or similar cookies)**
2 small packets of cheese or peanut butter crackers**
2 small packets of cheezits**
2 pens and a small notebook
3 pkgs of fruit snacks**
4 soft granola bars**
3 bags trail mix**

**all of these are small individual pkgs.

Additional items that are greatly appreciated are:
Small stuffed toy or matchbox car
8 pk of crayons and coloring book
Child's book in Spanish
Lap quilt or small fleece blanket
Reusable water bottle

A wonderful extra is a small Spanish English dictionary (usually about $5.00 at Barnes and Noble).

Pick up a backpack to fill on Sunday March 11th or 18th. Return the backpacks to the church office by Thursday, March 22nd. We will bless the backpacks on Palm Sunday, March 25th.

Mission Presbytery Meeting

Mission Presbytery (of which Parkway is a member congregation) met at West Lake Hills Presbyterian Church on March 2 and 3.

Laurie Kraus, a representative from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance who works out of the denominational offices in Louisville, Kentucky was present to review the work PDA is doing in recovery effort following Hurricane Harvey.

Jill Duffield, the Editor of the national magazine, "The Presbyterian Outlook," attended the meeting. She noted that when she became the magazine's editor a friend asked her about taking a job for a printed magazine in a mainline denomination. Jill laughed, admitted that it might not make great sense, but that she loves her work, and that with a web-site, a Facebook page, and other electronic forms means that the publication isn't just a print magazine any longer.

Chris Holmes, the newly hired Director for John Knox Ranch was introduced. John Knox Ranch is the Presbytery's camp. Chris first worked for John Knox Ranch when he came from England to the United States through an organization Camp America. One of his criteria was that he didn't want to serve as a church-related camp. He ended up at John Knox, loved the camp, converted to Christianity, met and married his wife, who was on the camp staff. For the past 15 years Chris worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department culminating in the role of Director of Outreach, Education and Interpretive Services for Texas State Parks. Chris laid out a comprehensive plan including promoting the camp beyond the church, improving the facilities, and updating the management system.

A report was received on the closing of First Presbyterian Church in Robstown. The church engaged in a unique ministry, but the recent death of the Lay Pastor has made continuing the ministry impossible.

There were several Overtures offered for discussion and vote on whether or not the item is to be forwarded to the General Assembly. Several Overtures will be considered by the General Assembly this summer having to do with climate change and the Committee on Mission Responsibility Through Investment. The Presbyterys and Synods in states, like Texas, with significant economic ties to the oil and gas industries are encouraging processes of engagement with rather than calling for divestment from those companies.

Lita Simpson was honored upon her retirement after 30-years working with Mission Presbytery. Lita began as a Resource Center Librarian in the Valley area. That position morphed into serving as the Youth Ministry Resource person for the Presbytery. Lita managed the annual Mid-Winter Retreats at Mo Ranch for Middle School and Senior High students. A few years ago Mo Ranch launched a program "Mo in the Valley," to offer a Mo Ranch summer camp program for children and youth. Dick Powell, the Executive Director of Mo Ranch, turned to Lita Simpson to help with all of the necessary local arrangements. Dick said that at the end of every day at camp there are awards given to the campers. At the end of the week there is an award given to one camper for outstanding cooperation and leadership. That award will now be named the "Lita Simpson Award."

It has also been reported that there was a stirring sermon delivered during worship by Dr. Allen Mosiman, but don't believe everything you hear.

Lenten Devotions
Don't forget to check out the Lenten devotions posted Sundays and Wednesdays to the Parkway Facebook page.
Izzy's Food Pantry
The next collection will be on Sunday, March 25.  This month we are collecting any pasta and sauce that is easy to prepare.

Also, our generous congregation helped us with February's Spread the Love campaign.  During this very successful campaign, Izzy's Pantry collected 227 jars of peanut butter and 131 jars of jelly.  Parkway was a significant contributor to those totals.
