New English Language Arts/English Language Development Curricula
Following an extensive review process, which included pilot programs at all six schools, the Board was asked to approve adoption of Benchmark Advance as core curriculum for students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade and LANGUAGE! Live California as core replacement and intervention curriculum for students in fourth through sixth grade who are reading more than two years below grade level. The total cost is $1,225,133. The new curricula will be implemented in the 2018/19 school year.
JumpStart4Kids Mental Health Services
Under this agreement, Western Youth Services will provide behavioral health aides to conduct individual and group sessions to address a variety of student issues such as peer pressure, emotional control, home/family concerns, grief/loss, and appropriate social skills development at King School through the end of the school year. The cost for these services will not exceed $25,440 and will be paid primarily from the school's Title I funding.
Revised Classified Job Descriptions
The California School Employees Association and the district follow a schedule for reviewing and updating classified job descriptions as needed. This month, the Board approved revisions for the positions of Secretary, Technology Maintenance Technician, and Substitute Services Specialist.
Architect Agreement for Maintenance & Operations Project
The Facilities Master Plan calls for relocation of the Maintenance and Operations/Transportation department (with the exception of buses) to the district property on Camp Street, adjacent to the closed Swain School site. The Board approved an agreement with Ghataode Bannon Architects for services related to this move. The cost will not exceed $233,900.
Environmental Consulting Agreement for Maintenance & Operations Project
Relocation of the Maintenance and Operations/Transportation department will result in a change of use for the property on Camp Street, requiring approvals from the City of Cypress through the Conditional Use Permit process. The Board approved an agreement with LSA Associates, Inc. for environmental analysis services at a cost not to exceed $81,300.
2017/18 Second Interim Report
School districts are required by the state to submit two interim financial reports each fiscal year and certify if the district will (positive certification), will not (negative certification), or might (qualified certification) meet its financial obligations for the current fiscal year and two succeeding fiscal years. The Board approved filing a positive certification for the district's
2017/18 Second Interim Financial Report.
2017/18 Comprehensive School Safety Plans
In accordance with Education Code, the Board approved the 2017/18 Comprehensive School Safety Plan for each of the district's six schools. The plans are available on the district
website and may also be accessed from each school's website.
Disposal of District-Owned Personal Property
The Board authorized the disposal of personal property, including televisions, furniture, pianos, and vehicles, that are unusable, obsolete, or no longer needed and not appropriate for sale or donation.
Library Book Donation by Board of Trustees
Every year, in honor of Day of the Teacher and Classified School Employee Week, the Board of Trustees donates a book to each school library. This year, the Board elected to donate six different books, one to each school. The selected titles are

Resolution Calling for Full and Fair Funding of California's Public Schools
California has the world's sixth-largest economy and the highest gross domestic product of any state. Yet, the state ranks near the bottom nationally in funding for public schools. The Board adopted a resolution urging the State Legislature to fund California schools at the national average or higher by the year 2020 and at a level that is equal to or above the average of the top 10 states nationally by the year 2025.
Board Compensation for Missed Meeting
Per Board Bylaw 9250, the Board must take action to authorize full compensation for any Board Member who was absent from a meeting. Trustee Lydia Sondhi was unable to attend the February 8, 2018, Board Meeting due to hardship. The Board adopted Resolution 178-12 authorizing full compensation for Trustee Sondhi for the month of February 2018.
