Paly's Challenge Success Committee invites all  Paly parents, students, and staff to read Frank Bruni's book about the college admissions process and how we can have a more balanced approach to this process. The committee will be hosting a student-teacher-parent "fishbowl" and discussion on Wednesday, February 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the MAC. We invite parents, students, and staff to attend and hear perspectives from representatives from all three groups.

Paly Media Arts Open House
Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, 6:00-8:00 PM, in the Paly Media Arts Center
Please join us for the third annual Paly Media Arts Center (MAC) Open House!  Come and hear about all of the media arts programs and meet some of the students and staff who run them. There will be tours of the building, information about Camp Mac and the MAC Boosters, and you will see Paly students busy creating the next edition of the school newspaper, The Campanile. If your student is interested in any type of media arts, come see what Paly has to offer. Drinks and dessert will be served.

Paly's annual Career Month Speaker Series will happen from February  26 to March 9th. We are currently planning the event and are looking  for speakers to talk to students about their careers. Rise Together Education NEW 
This is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt public charity with the mission to provide mentoring and financial support to low income college bound students graduating from Palo Alto High School. The students are supported throughout their 4 years of college with this 2018 class being the third group of graduates that need our help. Our goal for 2018 is to raise $400,000 and to support 51 low income students to attend college in the fall of 2018.

The board consists of faculty and community volunteers that meet once a month for 2 hours to discuss the mentoring and student support along with fundraising activities. Passionate about  assisting with equity amongst our PALY student's college education? We need volunteers to serve on the board or help with our 2nd Annual Fundraising Auction and Talent Show  March 22nd . Average time  commitment is 5 hours a month. Interested and would like to learn more about the mission of  Rise  Together Education?

Sports Training for Improving Performance and Avoiding Injuries NEW

$25/athlete, Great for high school students, adults, trainers and coaches!
Are you looking to be the best athlete you can be and keep yourself uninjured? Come learn from the experts who will focus on improving your form by suggesting ways to correct it or enhance it. The event will begin with a proper, revamped, intentional, sport-specific warm-up and athletic drills focused on the following areas: mobility vs. flexibility, deceleration in sports, hip hinge and hip and ankle mobility, and core training for athletes. Athletes will have performance testing that will give each athlete a baseline of their vertical leap, probability of injury and exercises that can improve athletic results. Hosted by Marc Guillet, Agile Physical Fitness; Nick Weiss, PerformanceGaines; and Christopher Gaines, PerformanceGaines. Come ready to learn and move! Send request for tickets to [email protected].

Food/ Beverages donations needed for the Wellness Center
Our students are very happy when there are tea and snacks available in the Wellness Center! Once again we seek your help in providing decaffeinated tea bags, cocoa, healthy nut free foods, fresh fruit and vegetable trays for the kids who stop by the Wellness Center. If you are interested in donating any of these items, please drop them off in the Wellness Center, located in the Tower Building, anytime during the school day. Paly Tower Building; Ongoing;  Light refreshments for teens during the school week
So many students just don't have time to get breakfast before heading off to school in the mornings. We, in the Main Office have been offering snacks (bars, crackers, fruit snacks, etc.) to any student who needs a pick-me-up at brunch in the Tower Building Hallway. Every single day, 40 -50 kids grab something to keep them going until lunch (For some it is their lunch, and their breakfast). If anyone wants to contribute, here is a link to an Amazon Wishlist. Fiery Arts Glass Workshops at Palo Alto High School 
Sat & Sun. Jan. 20-21; Feb. 3-4, 17-18; March 3-4, 17-18; April 7-8, 21-22; May 5-6, 19-20; June 2-3; 9-3 pm at Palo Alto High School's Glass Studio, 50 Embarcadero Rd.
Th ese workshops are open to the public, students and parents. You learn glass blowing technique in this hands-on 2-day weekend workshop. Advanced Sign up is required. Class limit is 4. Teens and adults. $425 per person. Proceeds benefit the Palo Alto High School Fiery Arts Boosters.

Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference

At this conference for 6-12th grade young women, students have the opportunity to meet women who use math and science in their careers. Over 100 women working in related fields will lead hands-on workshops that include experiments and a discussion of career options and educational requirements. Summer Opportunities Education Evening UPDATED
Wed, January 31st, 2018, 7:00pm, Gunn High's Library
Gunn High School will hosting the 7th Annual Summer Opportunities Fair at the Gunn Library. The purpose of the event is to introduce students and their parents to the various types of Summer Opportunities available around the world. We have representatives from about 20 programs both locally and nationally scheduled to set up booth at the fair. In addition many more programs have sent printed materials. The Summer Opportunities Fair is open to the all high schools students and parents from the local high schools.

College Rep Visits for Seniors (and Juniors, if space is available) 
Students must have their teacher's permission one day in advance if missing class. Pick up a form in the C&CC, or download it at admit-class-form-college-and-career-center . Bring the signed form the day of the visit to ensure the absence from class is cleared and marked as an activity rather than a truancy. College visits scheduled for the next two weeks are listed below. For a full list of all visits through Spring, login to Naviance using your user ID and password; click on the "Colleges" tab then click "view all upcoming college visits" within the "my colleges" section. Or, you can check the calendar on www.paly.net/college.

2018 Annual Sweetheart Awards - Call for Nominations NEW

Nominate Great People for Awards (Due March 1) NEW
Each year the Palo Alto Council of PTAs may bestow one of several California State PTA Honorary Service Awards to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding service to children and youth in our community. The individuals or organization nominated must make far-reaching, notable contributions. The PTA Council HSA Committee selects persons or groups who have benefited children and youth on a district-wide or Palo Alto community level.
We also have a new award that debuted last year that honors exceptional PTA volunteers at the unit (school) level. Each PTA may nomination one person.

How Does Sugar Affect Your Health and What You Can Do About It

Stanford Food and Mood Study is Recruiting! NEW
Eligible participants are between 9-17 years old, are experiencing low moods or irritability, have a body mass index greater than 85%, do not have braces or metal in their body.  Participants receive $325 for completing the study. Participants come in for clinical and cognitive evaluations, an MRI brain scan and a blood test 3 times over 2 years.

Palo Alto Youth Journalism Summer Camp NEW
Mon July 30 to Fri Aug 3 in the Media Arts Center at Palo Alto High School
After three hugely successful summers, Paly's distinguished journalism program will be returning again this summer with its fourth year of Camp MAC (Media Arts Center) on July 30th - August 3th. A new leadership team and with a plethora of journalism experience is in place and eager to educate new campers on a variety of journalistic skills including critical thinking, research, graphic design, and expository writing techniques. Counselors are the fun and qualified students of Paly's seven publications. The camp is open to all rising 8th and 9th graders, all proceeds support Paly's journalism program for the following year. Stanford University & City of Palo Alto Comp Growth
There is a significant project from Stanford University that will be coming upon PAUSD that may require your attention -- Stanford University's growth and expansion proposal and its impact within our city and school district. Stanford plans to add more academic and support facilities, housing units, childcare center and facilities to its camp, adding approx. 9,000 people to our area. Your comments regarding the significant environmental effects of this project and the adequacy of the Draft EIR are welcome. The public review period for this Draft EIR ends on Feb 2, 2018

Ongoing Stanford University Brain Study on Executive Function Skills
Looking for children ages 7 and up with a diagnosis of ADHD or with no diagnoses to participate in a study exploring changes in brain function in response to a novel neurofeedback training.
