Here's what's new on the Rock County 4-H website this month!
Cloverbud Animal Adventures: Sheep

Join us at our February Cloverbud meeting to learn all about Sheep! The meeting will be held on Saturday, February 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cloverbuds is open to all youth from K-2 and their families.  We will be touring Tiesler Farm. RSVP by February 7.

Performing Arts Workshop

Rock County is starting a Performing Arts club. Come learn more about it at a free workshop on February 10.


Communications Contest

The Rock County Communications contest will be held in the evening of March 1.  
The deadline to sign up for the contest is February 20.
Here is your opportunity to practice those lifelong skills of speaking in front of a group or using writing to communicate. This Communications Contest is open to ALL 4-Her's-including Cloverbuds.


Project Bowl Sign-Up Deadline - Feb 5

We are still recruiting members for our Rock County 4-H Project Bowl Teams. Project Bowl is like a Knowledge Bowl contest for youth in a specific Project area. There are Project Bowl opportunities for Dairy, Dog, General Livestock, Horse, Lama, Poultry, Rabbit, and Wildlife. We are also looking for volunteer coaches.


Beef Weigh In - February 1

Beef Weigh-In is scheduled for Thursday, February 1st (snowdate is 2/8) at the Rock Veterinary Clinic. Remember: You must be scheduled to attend weigh-in! Call Sheila at the office to schedule your time. If you are enrolled in the beef project or intend on showing beef and did not receive a letter, call the office at 507-283-1302.

Market Beef ID's are due February 15

All market beef and dairy steers need to be identified by February 15th. Families identify their Market Beef and Dairy Steer animals online, which means that by midnight on February 15th all data must be entered on 4Honline or the paper forms postmarked or submitted to the Extension Office.

Fruit and More Sale is ON

Rock County 4-H is busy selling fruit, frozen food, and puffins. Packets were given to all club leaders to distribute. Sales end February 4. On February 5, please turn your correctly added order forms and matching dollar amounts to your club coordinator. You have a chance to win cash for top sellers in the county and your club gets back 8% of sales to use for club activities .


Interim 4-H Program Coordinator

Kelsey (Hokanson) Maeschen is returning to Rock County to serve in the interim role of 4-H Program Coordinator! Kelsey's official start date is January 29th.


More 4-H news this month

Our next Rock County Ambie meeting will be Tuesday, February 6th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Rock County Extension Office meeting room. We will be planning and gearing up for upcoming spring and summer events

Club Leaders Meeting will be Monday, February 26 at 6 pm at the Extension Office meeting room. Karen Beranek will be joining you to facilitate conversation about all aspects of being a club leader

All livestock superintendents are invited to our winter meeting on February 26 at 7:30 pm to learn more about 2018 updates and planning!

Next Federation Meeting 
Rock County's next Federation meeting is March 1 at 7:00 pm.

The 2018 Southwest Animal Science Challenge will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, in Wabasso, Minnesota. This event will include horse and livestock project bowl competitions, hands-on skill-a-thon stations, and workshops on a variety of topics. 4-H'ers can attend as a project bowl team, or as an individual . Pre-registration by February 2 $10 per person, after February 2 $15 per person

This scholarship is for high school seniors and first-year college students currently enrolled in    4-H. Applicants must be from one of the following nine counties: Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Martin, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Rock or Watonwan
 
The Rock County 4-H Scholarship applications are now available on the Rock County 4-H web site or by contacting the Rock County Extension Office. 
 
Associate dean and state 4-H director Dorothy Freeman encourages young people to be bold and build their self-confidence.
 
In February, make a $4 donation at your local JOANN register. You'll support 4-H and get $4 off your next purchase. And join a special Valentine's Day community service event on Feb. 3.
 
Register by April 6 for the April 21-22 training to be held at the Long Lake Conservation Center in Palisades. This training is for Minnesota 4-H adults and youth (9th grade and older) that lead or would like to lead training in shooting sports or wildlife.
 
Minnesota 4-H is now accepting applications for 2018 summer internships with 4-H programs in counties across Minnesota. The application deadline is open until positions are filled with a preference for candidates who apply by Feb. 15.
 
4-H youth in grades 8 and up are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Explore Careers in Ag Day being held at Riverview LLP near Murdock. It's time to discover the opportunities awaiting you in the world of agriculture! Topics will include resume writing and job interview skills along with hands-on activities in the fields of animal nutrition, agronomy and animal science. Busing will be available from various locations. Parents are welcome to attend. Jump on board as we discover the opportunities awaiting 4-H youth in the vast field of agriculture! Monday, Feb. 19 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
 
Interested in becoming a county fair judge? Learning how to conference judge general projects at a FREE judges' training! We will learn about quality judging experiences, discuss project evaluation, ribbon standards and have a mock conference judging session. RSVP by Tuesday Feb. 13. Minimum of 10 registered to hold the training.
