A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVID
Follow up to Annual Meeting

Many thanks for all the behind the scenes work and presentation preparation done on behalf of our annual meeting last Sunday.

As we look toward the coming weeks and months, our Vestry, and subtask force for strategic planning will be discussing ways to minimize our operating expenses, grow our services and pursue our options for making our church building safer and easier to get from ground level to first floor.  As bids come in for our planned narthex renovation, removal of the stairs and the placement of an elevator (lift), we will need to consider our best approaches for trying to make all the necessary things happen both physically and financially.  As we gather the facts and identify the options, I want to present the congregation with information to make an informed decision for what we want to do to the building and how we should go about doing it.  I am thankful to Les Woodward and our capital campaign team for their work so far in gathering facts and information from contractors.  More needs to be done and within the next couple of months the Vestry hopes to have enough information to share with the greater congregation in a planned forum between the services at future date.

Please pray for guidance as we continue to gather information and plan the options for immediate and longer term future.

BOOK CLUB WILL MEET MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5 A Man Called Ove
7 pm in the Undercroft

The Finding Faith Through Fiction Book Club will meet on Monday, February 5 at 7 pm in the undercroft.  This month's reading is the New York Times Bestseller A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.

Ove is a curmudgeon-the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.
OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE Opportunities to Serve
Volunteers Needed!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, this is an invitation to all of us to consider what ministries we are being called to share in the work for the church.

Ushers:  There is a need for Ushers at both the 8:00 am and 10:30 services.  Please contact Chuck Sprofera or Fr. David if this interests you.

Lectors (Readers):  We also have a need for people to read the scriptures on Sunday morning.  This is a wonderful ministry for folks to share their vocal and reading skills.  Proclaiming the inspired words of God from the lectern is a vital ministry.  This ministry role is open to young adults in high school as well as older adults no longer in school.  Parents, if you feel your teenager is ready and willing, please contact Fr. David.

Eucharistic Ministers:   Fr. David will being forming a class to train new Eucharistic Minister to serve at the altar during both the 8:00 and 10:30 services.  This class will be a good review for current Eucharistic Ministers as well.  If you are interested in learning how to share the chalice and assist at the altar, please contact Fr. David.
SUNDAY SCHOOL/CHILDREN'S CHAPEL

We are very fortunate to have a Sunday School teacher who is prepared in teaching children's Children_s Chapel chapel in the Episcopal tradition.  Gabriella Benson has been involved in diocesan youth ministry as both a youth and adult in leading and helping to grow Sunday school and youth programs.

It used to be that making sure our children attended Sunday School as often as possible was expected as we grew up in the church.  Today I can appreciate the difficulty in balancing school and sports schedules to even attend church on a Sunday morning.  I cannot emphasize enough; however, how important it is for our children to learn about the church, the stories in the bible and their obligations as young Christians living in today's world. Sunday School provides the necessary learning to be familiar with what Christians believe, how the Episcopal Church fits in our lives as a Christian denomination, and most importantly to help children learn how to have a relationship with Jesus.

If you asked your child what they believe and why they believe, would you get a clear and informed answer?  It is my prayer that knowing what it means to be a Christian and how to live a life professed by Jesus is as important, or even more important, to your children as sports, music and even their general academic education.  Church education needs to be a scheduled and important part of our children's, youth and young adult Christian formation.  Please consider how Sunday school can make a difference in our youth.  Come to Sunday School!
