Russ’ Raves
Greetings from the Main Office! We are off to an excellent start to the 2 nd semester! Our students are working very hard and our seniors are finalizing their post-secondary plans (Graduation May 25).

Parent teacher conferences have wrapped up. Please continue communicating with your child's teachers after these conferences as communication must be kept up all semester. Our winter athletics and activities are heading into their final stages, with our spring activities right around the corner.

Please keep encouraging your students to do their best, and get plenty of rest as the cold/flu season is still here. If you have time, please come and watch our students perform in our various sports and performances that will be coming up.
Go Spartans!!!

Assorted notes from the math world (or at least the 100 hallway of Sparta High School…)

• Life and death: The Pre-Calculus classes completed a unit on right triangles and trigonometry proofs. It was determined that in order to solve right triangles you need to know which trigonometry function should be used. In the process, if you stub your toe you may need to go SOH CAH TOA. (Ask your son/daughter about that.)

In the real world: Students in Algebra 1 have been graphing inequality linear equations. They are solving linear programming problems relating to real-life problems. They can then use these inequality equations to make predictions about what may maximize and minimize the problems.

• A question of balance: Geometry and Applied Geometry students are solving proportion problems and relating proportions to triangles and other polygons.

Know your area: Did you know the opposite of a derivative is an integral? The AP-Calculus students are finding that out as well as learning to find the area between a curve and the x-axis.

The final word: If you are cold this winter, try standing in a corn er. They are usually 90 degrees.

Business Education
Intro to Business Class Raises over $650 for Local Charities

After learning the basics of running a business, students operated six businesses through their Intro to Business class. Earning funds for a student and a teacher that are both fighting battles with cancer were a bracelet group, a jewelry group and a button group that earned almost $300 selling buttons. A candle group and magnet group raised over $100 for SACS and the Ecommerce (Ebay) group donated their profits to our local no-kill shelter. The students created the products or received donated items, and marketed, sold & packaged their products. Tristan Alexander, a member of the candle group, said “This project was a great way to utilize the principles of this class and more”.

Second semester’s class will not only be running the Ebay business but also making Spartan tie blankets after receiving a grant for the material from the Sparta Area Education Foundation. The blankets will be sold for $15/each. If you’d like to place an order, please contact jbeyer@spartan.org.

Winter Assembly

Our Spartan Dance Team qualified for the state competition in La Crosse so a winter pep assembly was held to allow our athletes to showcase their skills. In addition, the Vocal Jazz also performed for the student body. As Spartans we support all extra curricular groups in their endeavors.
