Regional Spelling Bee Winner from Hinsdale Middle School
On February 28, Wheaton North High School hosted the DuPage Regional Spelling Bee which included 27 finalists from public and private schools in the area. Atman Balakrishnan (pictured right), a sixth grader from Hinsdale Middle School, secured his spot to Washington for the final rounds to be held in May.

ISBE/National Board Subsidy Opportunity
The Illinois State Board of Education is pleased to announce the opening of the 2018 Illinois $1,900 NBPTS Candidate Fee Subsidy. The National Board Resource Center at Illinois State University will process applications for eligible Illinois teachers and counselors. Funding has been made available for 500 candidates.

Chicagoland AP Consortium at Westmont High School - May 21
AP teachers from across Illinois are invited to attend this year’s Reflection and Renewal AP Consortium on Monday, May 21 at Westmont High School. The event features sessions in 20 different disciplines to allow teachers in the same discipline to debrief on recently administered exams, share best practices, and build student-centered strategies that can be applied to the classroom.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hosts Literary Contest for Middle School and High School Students - Due October 31
Patriots Pen
The Patriots Pen is a nationwide essay contest open to students in sixth through eighth grades. This year’s theme is “Why Honor the American Flag?”
Voice of Democracy
The Voice of Democracy is a recorded speech competition open to ninth through twelfth grade students. This year’s speech theme, “Why My Vote Matters,” must be recorded on a CD.
Completed essays and recorded speeches must be turned in to the student’s local VFW no later than October 31, 2018. Visit
