As a certified yoga instructor, I have long been aware of yoga's ability to benefit a person's mind and body. However, it was not until my daughter, who has special needs, trained to receive her certification to become one of the first teen yoga instructors in the U.S., that I truly understood the depth of its benefits.
Yoga is a full-circle practice of breathing (pranayama, also known as prana), movement (mudra), and sound (mantra). The asanas (poses), vinyasa (sequence of asana), and accompanying breathing serve to address the physical and emotional aspects in the practicing individual. | 'Baby sibs' who evade autism remain at risk for attention deficit |

Sally Ozonoff began studying infant siblings of children with autism in 2003. Her goal then was to follow these 'baby sibs,' who are at elevated risk of autism, and detect any early signs of the condition.
Her study is among the longest-running of such projects and now includes more than 300 children. And her findings have been pivotal to identifying autism's early signs.

When President George H.W. Bush signed the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law nearly 28 years ago, he eloquently declared, "Let the shameful wall of exclusion come tumbling down." That was a watershed moment for our country. After decades of willful exclusion and benign neglect, people with disabilities finally secured the civil rights they deserved to be full participants in our great society.
President Bush observed that the disabilities law would:
"Ensure that people with disabilities are given the basic guarantees for which they have worked so long and so hard: independence, freedom of choice, control of their lives, the opportunity to blend fully and equally into the rich mosaic of the American mainstream." Read on... |

| Jobs, relationships elude adults with autism |
| |
Nearly half of adults with autism live with a family member and about one in five is unemployed, according to a new analysis1. Only 5 percent have ever been married.
The findings suggest that many middle-aged adults with autism have little independence.
The work echoes a study from last year that found that about half of adults with autism live with a family member. The unemployment rate in the new sample is only slightly lower than the 27 percent reported in that study. Read on... |

| Autism Accessibility Morning at the Fleet! |

The third Saturday of every month, Fleet invites the Autism Spectrum Community to enjoy our museum through this special opportunity. Adults and families with children with autism can enjoy the Fleet's exhibit galleries in a quieter setting, an hour before regular open hours to the general public and with access to a special cool-off space. Visitors are welcome to stay and enjoy the museum all day. Admission includes a special IMAX film screening at 10 a.m. with the house lights on and a lower soundtrack volume.
