KNEADED NOTES
January 2018

A letter from the President

               "Everyone is awesome!"
                                    -Kim

I open Constant Contact to write my little note to the Indiana members and I see the above quote. Our Newsletter Editor was throwing something in my spot to hold space, and it is most fitting for my first letter of the new year, and may be the last note as President.  It is true, my first term as chapter president is almost over (where did the last 2 years go?) and.... Everyone is awesome!  We have 1,350 members (last count) and every single one of you makes our organization, AMTA, the most respected in the industry. Thank you for being awesome!

I've grown so much as I learned to lead a chapter, accept change, and to find my strength to do some jobs I very much did not want to do.  Guess what, I did them and I survived!  I spent a lot of time trying to guilt members into taking a volunteer position and for that I apologize.  Your board members and I will not be doing that anymore!  You can come to our meetings and know that we won't hang you from your toenails until you say yes.  Yes, we will probably ask you but we will respect your answer.
I saw the words in the poster to the right on social media and it is now the background on my computer screen.  This poster is true in many facets of my life.  My new year resolution is to quit chasing. I am choosing to be the best I can be; so you, the member, can know that I am here for you and by seeing that you will want to come to me and let me know your strengths and how you want to help.
I began my presidency with a few volunteers.  None of us knew what we were doing.  I found out that National has it all spelled out in neat and easy to follow toolkits for the chapters to use.  We have a policy manual that gives us all the information on how to be a chapter...we get free-will in which programs we choose to do or not do in our state...all of that depends on the members.  "What do you want?"  I want an emergency response team in our state.  I can't have one if no one else wants it.  Guess what!  Members do want it and the Tennessee Chapter is allowing us to come to a training meeting so we can get one started!  Once our volunteer learns her position and what is required she will work at getting the CSMT training in Indiana.  Lorrena Story will update us after she attends the training weekend in February.
This newsletter has our upcoming education included, you will see that we are going to try offering lunch on both Saturday and Sunday because YOU asked for it!   Our state conference is also when we have our chapter elections. This year includes the position of president.  Are you ready to lead an amazing chapter?   What was the the hardest part of my job over the last two years?  Working on the bill that would become law.  I didn't know anything about government.  I didn't want to waste our chapter money on licensing efforts when it hadn't worked any other year.  I said I would do my duty if I had help from our National leaders...and now we have licensure!  Our 20+ year battle is over.  National staff makes every part of our chapter running easy.  We now have volunteer positions almost full which will allow you to accomplish your goals that you set.  If you have been a member for at least 2 years you can run for this amazing position!  Other election spots include secretary, board member and delegate. You will find more information about the spots in this newsletter or you can email me! Oh, and I just want to remind you that I too have a busy life, with management skills you can do it all!
As we tighten our financial belts this board took a look at what we spend our money on and we shifted some things around at the last two chapter board meetings as we worked on the budget.  We  got rid of our stipends, computer purchases, and registration to National Convention.  We will be reimbursed for money we spend doing our jobs and we will go to convention for leadership training.
Our next business meeting is also a time that our chapter presents awards to members who improve our industry in an altruistic way.  Do you know someone who should be recognized?  Or maybe you would like to share your own accomplishments.  Don't let the application scare you away, submit what you do know and our awards chair can help you find the rest of the information.    Please note the deadlines for applications, they are shorter this year; March 15 for state awards and April 1 for National.
I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as your president on the AMTA chapter board, life is good!  Bucket list item check off!

YOU CAN  CHOOSE ONE OF TWO  GREAT EDUCATION CLASSES:

CHOICE #1
Hot DNM: Pillossage & Pain Science class description (16 CE hours)

Participants will need to bring Massage tables sheets and face cradle covers.

Description:
HOT DNM: Pillossage™ & Pain Science is an integrated class taught by Jason Erickson. Pillossage is a groundbreaking form of thermal therapy that combines hands-on techniques with specifically designed thermal flax pillows. This modality is ideal for therapists who are looking for techniques to provide skillful therapy that can stand alone or be integrated with other modalities to offer to clients who live with conditions that include chronic pain, high levels of stress or who are in need of rehabilitation.
You will learn to teach your clients novel self-care techniques so therapy can be continued by the client after the session. The benefits and results last far beyond the massage session. You will learn methods to help clients decrease chronic pain and improve quality of life. As you learn the 'dance of Pillossage™', you will find easier ways to offer deep therapy without strain.

The foundations of this work are informed by pain science and dermoneuromodulation (DNM) concepts. These enable practitioners to work more effectively and customize sessions appropriately for each client, especially when working with chronic pain clients and complex health conditions.

Participants will need to bring Massage tables sheets and face cradle covers.
Mother Earth Pillows will be provided for use in class. These may be purchased afterwards. A selection of other Mother Earth Pillows will also be available

New Years is a wonderful time of the year to promote massage therapy, because   it aligns so well with many common New Years Resolutions like starting an   exercise routine and increasing self-care.

Massage therapy supports and pairs well with wellness-focused Resolutions,       and can also act as a "reward" for staying on track with creating a better you!

Write offs and deductions
Deductions or "write-offs" reduce your taxable income. So if you  have $50,000 of income and $10,000 in deductions  (write-offs) your taxable income is now $40,000. This is the amount you pay taxes on, so it is advantageous  to keep track of your expenses!
This is a general list, it's always best to consult your CPA!

sheets, blankets, bolsters, pillows           the fees your CPA charge
lotions, oil, etc                                          laundry soap
water bottles for clients                            essential oils
continuing education fees                        tools, hot stones, bamboo, etc
certification and permit fees                      credit card processing fees
professional organization fees                  mileage for mobile massage clients
travel to continuing education                   making copies of intake forms
rent & utilities

If you have an at-home office you can deduct that dedicated space on your taxes. Again, it's always best to consult your CPA after reading this brief explanation.
You can determine the value of your deduction the easy way or the hard way.
With the simplified option, you aren't deducting actual expenses. Instead, the square footage of your space is multiplied by a prescribed rate. The rate is $5 per square foot for up to 300 square feet of space. If your home office is over 300 square feet, you can't use the simplified method.

The regular, more difficult method values your home office by measuring actual expenditures against your overall residence expenses. You can deduct mortgage interest, taxes, maintenance and repairs, insurance, utilities and other expenses.

You can use  Form 8829 to figure out the expenses you can deduct and file only with Schedule C (Form 1040).

Please meet Jules Carter, our new Education Chair!

"I have been a massage therapist since 1994, receiving my massage degree in Atlanta, Georgia. My family moved to Muncie in 2006 & we consider it home. I have practiced in 3 different states that did not have licensure.  Being an AMTA member is a way to provide my clients with a sense of how serious I take my chosen profession. The AMTAs' CEU requirements, sets the massage therapist up to be ready when or if your state already has licensure. When the second state I practiced in approved licensure, the AMTA was involved to protect our interests when setting standards. Our local chapter & national chapter is doing that now, here in Indiana. I find that so important & one of the driving reasons why I stepped up to volunteer.  By volunteering in the AMTA Indiana chapter, I am excited to be a part of this great group of people who are nurturing a message of unity, creating a network of like minded professionals and directing what the standards should be as a massage therapist in our state. Each one of us brings something special to the table & I look forward to meeting my other Indiana massage therapists in the near future."

Please meet Lorrena Story, our new Community Service Chair!
"I have been a full time therapist for almost 7 years. I started
out at a  chiropractic  office, then had my own studio for a very short time and now I have been at Massage Envy for just over 3 years! I originally became interested in massage
when my oldest son was experiencing severe growing pains as a young child. I began searching for stretches and ways to work his muscles in order to find relief for him. That's when my interest in human anatomy really started to develop.

I volunteered because I have a fascination  for Emergency Management and have always considered myself a natural first responder. Many times I see events on the news and was curious if any massage teams were on site to provide assistance. My hope is to build a team of therapists with a wide array of skills who are well qualified to respond if ever needed. I want to reach out to our communities and help educate them on the importance of massage during times of crisis and the vital role touch therapies can play in dealing with both physical and mental stress."

Seeking to mentor!
Beginning with a little Leslie history: I have been practicing massage therapy for twenty years. In the 90's I owned an herb shoppe in Greenwood, Indiana. When I sold the shoppe, I found I missed working with  essential oils. Luckily at the same time, my husband worked for Rolls Royce in helicopter engines and through him we received an opportunity of a lifetime. Our family was offered a secondment in England for two years. So, we packed up our teenagers (kicking and screaming at first, loving it by the time we returned) and set off to jolly ole England. I registered for the Shirley Price International College of Aromatherapy Aromatic Bodywork classes before we even set foot overseas. It was a one year program that included massage training. I loved it so much, I registered for a second year in Clinical Aromatherapy which was mostly chemistry of the oils and their actions. I specialized in how aromatherapy was utilized in hospitals with particular interest in cancer patient palliative support as a complimentary therapy through massage. I had an awesome experience which lead me to continue on the massage therapy path when we returned. I took class after class to enrich my basic training and eventually went through enough training to pursue the portfolio avenue to test and attain my national certification here at home. I then developed a successful pilot program for our local cancer center and received grants for the program which I worked with for five years. 2018 celebrates my 20 th year in massage therapy and retirement from massage therapy practice. My husband has retired and we bought thirty acres of hills, ponds and vistas in southern Indiana. My attention is being drawn from work to writing, art, gardening and playing on our new off grid playground. I will keep certification for another four years but my focus is changing. I'm ready to pass the baton to the next generation of massage therapists and look forward to witnessing where their innovation and social media skill will launch the future of the profession.
Over the past year, I have had the pleasure and honor of serving on the Indiana Board for AMTA with a top notch group of massage therapists. It is a rewarding experience in which I have had the opportunity to attend the national convention as a voting delegate, received leadership training, met therapists from all across the country while benefitting from included education. I have another year to serve and am seeking a candidate who would like the opportunity to be mentored to apply and run for my place on the board in spring 2019. This could include observing board meetings and becoming aware of all the avenues of support national and state offers, planning education and conferences. It is an opportunity for someone who is interested in being on the board to be guided through the process and easy transition into position. If you are interested in exploring a board position please email me at [email protected]

Emergency Response Training February 3rd & 4th

Join us in thanking these members for signing up for this training, and committing to helping our Nation when it is most needed.

              Thank you!!

New Years Resolutions for your Business

Whatever goals you have for yourself or your business this year, take a look at these 5 suggestions for success:
  1. Be for something, not against it. Instead of setting the goal of, "I want to stop over-working myself." Try stating what it is you do want...more self-care, more free time, more exercise & wellness.
  2. Figure out the desire. Desire is a strong emotion that shows us how badly we want something. Tapping into that can help determine the motivation, and that creates action.
  3. Believe in baby steps. Not every day is going to be a knock-em-down affair. Have confidence in your success, and be proud of all steps....big and small...that move your forward.
  4. Set an intention, not a goal. Instead of setting a goal, which is something we don't have that we aim to get, set an intention, which is a goal but with all the doubt about its attainment removed. State your intention as if you've already achieved it, with lots of specific details. For example, "After a year, my beautiful, new massage practice in the best part of town is swarming with excited clients. I've repaid all my startup loans and I'm making a nice profit."
  5. Be flexible. Sometimes when we set intentions and goals, we envision only one path. And yet, opportunities can present themselves in all forms. Be open minded, and willing to see your success happen in many ways.

Massage is good medicine

What makes the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) different?
  • AMTA is the only national non-profit association dedicated to serving members and the massage therapy profession, giving AMTA the non-profit advantage.
  • We endorse professional standards and support fair and consistent licensing of massage therapy. We actively promote members as the first choice for massage therapy to consumers.
  • We are led by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the membership at the national and chapter levels.
  • AMTA has been, and will continue to be, a leader in advancing the massage therapy profession.
