Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Cleanup
Photo by Molly Anderson of The Nature Conservancy

On Monday, January 15th, we held our 10th annual cleanup at the Bristol Marsh Nature Preserve in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Over 50 compassionate volunteers ranging from two years old to retired braved the cold to come out and care for this important natural resource, which is home to more than 350 different species of plant and animal life, including several rare species.

Nearly 100 bags of trash were removed from the marsh, including a mattress, a shopping cart, wood pallets, and a bike! Since any trash from the Bristol Marsh will eventually flow into the Delaware River, which 15 million people depend on for their drinking water, it is essential to keep this natural resource free from contaminants.

Did you miss the cleanup but would like to help out? Heritage Conservancy's Lower Bucks Environmental Stewardship Team (LBEST) is a core group of passionate volunteer community members and partner organizations working together to support the health of the Bristol Marsh and the Delaware River Watershed. To join LBEST and be a part of making a positive impact along the Delaware River, contact us at 215-345-7020.

Thank you to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), G.O.A.L., Whole Foods Market, Wegmans, Calm Waters Coffee Roasters, Bristol Borough and Bristol Township Police Department for supporting this cleanup.
The Great Backyard Bird Count
It's time to spread your wings as a citizen scientist!

Your research mission, should you choose to accept it, is to observe and inventory birds for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. It is fun, free, and it takes as little as 15 minutes in your own backyard. Your results will help researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society expand their understanding of birds and their geographical location on an international scale.

The Great Backyard Bird Count will take place from February 16-19, 2018. No prior birding experience is needed, making this a volunteer project the whole family can enjoy!

The Great Backyard Bird Count falls into a category of volunteer opportunities known as citizen science projects. These projects are a great opportunity for volunteers of all ages and experience to participate in scientific data collection. Volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the natural world in their own communities, and scientists gain a more diverse sample of data than they could accomplish on their own.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is not just a wonderful reason to survey birds in your backyard but also birds at your favorite natural places. Many Heritage Conservancy properties are open to the public and are great locations for birding. Don't miss this chance to get outside, volunteer, and learn more about the birds in your own backyard!

It's official!
In the fall, we shared stories with you about the Avayou farmhouse and the Solebury Schoolhouse being listed on our Register of Historic Places. We are happy to share that we held a small ceremony presentation for each, and they now proudly display the plaques bestowed upon them to acknowledge their historical significance.

Heritage Conservancy hopes that its Register of Historic Places will educate the community about the history of our area and that it will evoke a sense of pride for the structures that we are fortunate to still have intact. As a result, this historic status will help to encourage stewards of our great heritage.

Please help us further our mission of preserving and protecting our historic heritage. Contact us at 215-345-7020 to learn about submitting a nomination for consideration to our Register of Historic Places, or click HERE to learn more.
Nickels for Nonprofits
Grocery shop while making a difference for your community? Cross that off your list!

Year-round, Whole Foods Market features a local nonprofit group as a Nickels for Nonprofits recipient in-store. This winter, they are featuring Heritage Conservancy as its recipient at the Whole Foods Market North Wales.

When shoppers bring their own bag to the North Wales store to shop (some of you may even have your reusable Heritage Conservancy bags--these would be perfect to use!), they can either receive a 5-cent bag refund or they can donate their refund, which will then be given to our organization.

From now through March 31st, shop at the Whole Foods Market in the Gwynedd Crossing Shopping Center (1210 Bethlehem Pike, North Wales, PA 19454) and donate your bag refund to Heritage Conservancy. Please tell your friends!
